I don't hang out with Progressives. I will on occasion engage one just to see what new crackpot ideas are en vogue.

100% correct. I am glad you do not equate "education" with college. Skilled trades are where it's going forward.
The next labor catastrophe- commercial drivers. They will be nearly fully automated within 20 years; probably half that. Over 3.5 million people are professional truck drivers.

As for being "for more police"; while many of these metro areas do need more cops- what good does it do to have more cops if the ones currently on the force are not allowed to do their jobs?

Cops always have the right to ask you to consent to a pat down. But forced detainment; stand alone; absent any other articulable facts; no. But add in high crime area, appearance of gang association, illegally congregating, odor of prohibited drugs; etc. then the answer is yes.

When I referred to the "stop and frisk" era of law enforcement in NYC, I was using it as a catch all phrase to describe general law enforcement tactics at the time, which largely correlates to the Theory of the Broken Window school of thought. Small crimes beget bigger crimes. Cities ignore them at their peril.

If a small time crook knows that in a given area there's a decent chance cops are going to brace him/her and get jammed up for possession of weed or a weapon; then s/he'll either avoid the area or avoid carrying contraband and otherwise acting the fool in said area. Small time crooks rarely stay small time- they tend to try to get away with more and more at least in volume if not in severity.

It's a natural human tendency. Think about your kids- always pushing boundaries. If you don't teach them to respect the rules they will not.

Rolling out a patch to 300 ATMs and the only 2 that fail are in my coverage area...each 3 hrs away from my house and each other. So much for my scheduled vacation day tomorrow.

This is two fires on the same mountain that blew up in the last two days. This is the view from my town. The communities to the north are being evacuated. Livestock has been lost. Structures are going to be destroyed.

What ticks folks off out here is that both of theses fire started out really small. They were lightning strikes to individual trees.
They were reported right away and remained tiny fires for days, one for weeks. Yet the Forest Service decided to 'manage' the fires instead of putting them out. That might be okay on an average year but we're experiencing a severe drought. The humidity is 5-10% and strong winds were predicted for this week for over a week. Just bad management.

And people wonder why western folks don't trust the feds.

In two days the bigger fire went from 5 acres to over 20,000. A fire that has been at five acres or less since the end of August. The wind was too strong to send out air support and the fire moving too fast for ground crews.[IMG]

Christine, here is a dirty secret that the feds will not tell you. There were many people like me that used to go out west to fight fires. I was a state employee and to go west the feds would make us federal hires as AD's. Well the forest service did not want to do the administrative work so they they decided that would not do it this year. The result is many large fires are under staffed and the ability to handle the smaller fires is diminished as well because they are spread so thin. This was not a Trump decision this was the Forest Service.

Uhh... I believe a large majority of their sales come from North America (close to 50% - 44-45% to be exact). If you can find conflicting information on that please let me know (I used the Google machine to help me).
