Officially started my vacation today...off to the 14th!!! Bad wind today so I'll be mowing and weed eating this evening.
Well , went Saturday, Sunday, and Monday afternoon and no luck. I am almost afraid the scent got me. Nothing blew but had only 1 buck come in Saturday which was small 8, then Sunday and Monday just does and they wouldn't come inside 80 yards. The doe was coming in threw her head up a couple of times then just went back the other ways feeding. I showered, washed clothes, ozone, the works. But when its 85 to 90 degrees it is just hard.
I still haven't been out, 93° at 7pm today, with 100% humidity and a south east wind...that's just not going to work for me
Think that's the hardest part is looking at camera pic knowing they are coming in during daylight but the wind in their favor. I want to hunt and part of me says heck with it, hunt. The other part is like dont be stupid, wait for the right wind ..... which isn't until Sunday.
Between a stalled front across IL the rest of the week and remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon merging with it rain is going to be the predominant theme the rest of the week. We are looking at significant amounts of rain and keeps going up.
Let me ask you all this. Wind isn't in your favor but giving rain during the hunt, even a light rain. Does that help enough or any at all with the scent and wind during the hunt? Or should a person still stay out?
I dont have a lot of experience hunting in rain but usually the water would kill your scent to some degree. I would say give it a try if your really sure that the buck your after would be there. If not i would wait it out still plenty of season left no need to educate him yet.
I wouldn't risk it personally, but I also don't hunt in the rain even if the wind is right, lol....with that said, calling for a chance of thunderstorms every day next week for my area
Looks like Friday and Saturday are going to be good for me (I can work with a NNW wind), that is if the storm's hold off. Planning my first set for Friday if the current forecast holds true
NNW is my favorite wind. My experience is the rain will wash away scent from your trail in but does not help much once in stand. I will not sacrifice the wind no matter what as hard as it can be to sit out. Choose a different location.
Calling for ENE wind all day but it's almost dead calm...very light and variable. We're supposed to have a fairly quick drop in temp (10-15°) this evening. I'm going to get my gear and stage up about 200 yards out and as soon as the thermals switch and start to drop, I'm slipping in for a hunt.
I'll be able to hunt the tree I pre prepped. It's about 80-100 yards from his bed. Just hope he doesn't decide to move around 6-6:15, lol. My scent should fall and puddle into a creek right behind my stand. I've always been kinda passive/aggressive...I've been real passive and now I'm fixing to be real aggressive for a couple days. My gut tells me I need to make a move NOW. If the acorns start to drop I'm gonna lose him and be back at square one.
