    Newly established clover plot being invaded by weeds/grass. Suggestions to control the weeds? Mow, fertilize?

    Slay to kill the grass, mow and over seed with more clover in the thin spots.

    For grass you a grass control herbicide. I like GrassOut its decently priced and is essentially Clemodim. You will need a surfactant to make sure it sticks to the grass. There are somethings that will kill other weeds in clover but this time of the summer you run the risk of burning your clover too so its best to mow. Then this fall overseed and you should be good.

    Chemical called raptor...kills everything but clover. Works awesome but down side is it's 500 a gallon. I go in thirds with friends and it lasts 2 years

    $500 a gallon, I can hand pull a lot of weeds for $500.

    Agreed but I don't have the time to pull weeds over acres. 165 for 2 years is $80 or so. That's not that bad.

    Clethodim for grasses and mowing will do everything you need. Most broadleaf weeds are solid food sources anyways for deer and are not a blanket negative like many feel.

    I agree with Ty. Mow two or three times throughout the summer and the clover will take over. It might look a little rough in june and July but by Sept-Oct, nothing but clover

    Yeah I mowed for the first time last night I should have mowed 3 weeks ago but it was too hot.

    Keystone Pest Solutions carries "Imox" - same active ingredient as in Raptor - at $292.95/gal. (There is also a shipping charge). Good for your clover and chicory plots. If your weeds are grasses, then use clethodim.

    Mowing won't kill the grasses, but will kill out the weeds. Grass will take over a clover plot if you let it. I haven't done a great job of maintaining mine and can promise that the grass will end up out competing the clover pretty quickly.

    If it’s grass I see the issue but if it’s broadleaf I wouldn’t worry about it. Deer love native broadleaf

    Newb plotter question, but does clethodim effect chicory and alfalfa or not?

    If you mow appropriately they'll never even reach seeding state...however I'll gladly let ragweed seed out and then mow....stuff is awesome brows. I don't do that purposefully but I do love ragweed.

    Cleth will not kill the clover...however I've experience some stress to it and the chicory if using crop oil or vegetable oil as we do. I go lighter or avoid using it at all personally when treating my clover/chicory plots with it.
