Kinda cool, I have a oak tree by the end of my driveway it has a weird bend to it, like it grew 3 feet and the trunk was bent 90 degrees then grew 3 feet sideways then resumed growing straight. I have driven by that tree for 24 years and always thought it was just a weird growing tree. I saw a random article about native american marker trees and that is exactly what I have. There are burial mounds about 2 miles north of me so it was defiantly and area that was inhabited and used. Wonder what my marker tree marked, a good spot to hunt? I will take a picture when I get back home after I increment bore the tree to age it.
Like I said an increment bore will tell me the age, it is either a pin or bur oak of some kind I have cut down a couple like it over the years that look like a 20-30 year old tree but are much much older and the wood is as dense as heck.
Now that you posted the pic, I know I've seen those around...I'll have to pay attention more next time.
I am going to break out the compass and follow the direction the tree is pointing to see what it leads to or if there are more trees. It is interesting in doing research about the history of the area as far as natives. They found a prehistoric bison skeleton on a sand bar in the st. francis river near my place, also a guy working for a power company burying a line found a copper spear point. I guess I should not be amazed by native activity in the area but it is interesting.
I just fished the St. Francis in the refuge last week. Will keep my eye out for the ancient buffaloes next time I'm out there Had no idea there were burial grounds or native activity in our area like that. Seriously cool. Going to research it more today.
The baldwin township website is a good source. What part of the St Francis did you fish? The Forks? big pike in there or at least used to be. If you fished the forks you were about a half mile from my house, you drove right by.
So are “marker trees” grow that way naturally? Or are you thinking it was manipulated to grow that way to be used as a marker tree?
It was manipulated to grow that way do a search on marker trees it will explain, also interesting how widespread this is around the country and different tribes.
Marker trees are a theory that I'm not completely sold on. Especially the modern marker trees.....all the methheads swear by them...all the scholars are very sceptical, lol.

We fished just outside of Santiago. Hiked in about 3/4 mile. The bugs/flys are absolutely terrible and forced us out early (even though we loaded up the bug spray). Got about 20 smaller northerns before we couldn't handle the flys anymore.
