Diff Types of Rye?

The Rye I overseeded my Fall plantings with in early September (Jeff Sturgis way) worked great. So great it was like 5-6' this Spring with all my rain here in MI. Are there specific types you are using that will not get quite as tall?

 

There are some shorter versions but you can mow it if need be. That will also help control unwanted broadleaf. That of course will only work if your primary plot is not some sort of broadleaf.

 

I assume you planted winter rye? Winter rye and rye grass are totally different. I usually plant my fall winter rye with clover around Labor Day. The WR feeds deer through the winter and helps establish the clover for the following spring. Once the WR matures in the spring, which will turn yellow and be 4-5ft tall, I simply mow it to about 8 inches and you will have a great established clover plot. The WR is also very good for the soil as organic matter with it's deep root system.

 

Exactly what I did. It didnt yellow so I assume it wasnt ready yet but my clover was like 3' tall so I opted to mow.

 

This is what I am looking for yep. I dont have a brushhog so my mowing capabilities are less, and a shorter version would work. Do you know them by name?

 

Look for dwarf rye grass seed.

 

I don't think that's what anyone would want for a deer plot.

 

I would just mow it sooner without brushhog accesibility like we used to do when using lawnmowers.

You could look at Winter Triticale.
