These are both firsts for me. I cut a bunch of hackberry trees off at around 18" from the ground along some common trails leading to my stand after hearing all the hub bub about mineral stumps. My hinge cuts are further back in the woods. To me hackberry is a trash tree to begin with so no love lost, would rather see the oaks flourish. They are definitely munching on them. So, I got that going for me.. The other pics are of a few stands of Egyptian Wheat, aka Chicken Corn for you Show-me farm boys or at least that's what my grandpa called it. I think I may have broadcast it a little thick and I mixed some milo in with it on the outside of the one band of it. I hit it with a little 10-20-10 about three weeks ago.
I do live in Oklahoma.. but we constantly have wind so it does tend to stunt and strengthen things. Tbh , I never even gave that a thought so hopefully it works out.. I'm just amazed that it had such a good germination rate for being broadcasted.
Yes but also the quail and turkey apparently really like it. I have a nice covey after years of not even so much as hearing a quail so trying to do all I can to help them flourish.
Btw, bucknbears I planted some pumpkins on a few old dirt mounds around my plot. I may have got them in a little late but hoping they take off.
Oklahoma summers can be brutal and we have already had days close to 100°. I planted the ones in the garden the first week of May.
Well, I definitely seeded this a little too thick. I anticipated the hogs rooting through it and thanks to the trap and 450 bushmaster I have thinned them out pretty well. Here are a couple pics from this last week. Notice the sumac in the one pic, I ran a line of EW between two large stands of it that the deer bed in and it funnels right into my food plot. They already have a nice trail going through it. The other is screening on the woodline leading to my tree stand.
