Am I too late to top coat my clover plot? I planted a clover plot last fall, it came up spotty at best but I understand that is common for year 1. I want to top coat this spring to help it along but I think I have missed the window for frost seeding. Mid 50 daytime highs and around 35 nighttime lows I am sure there is no harm in topseeding right now as the seeds are small enough where a light rain will drive them in. Anyone have additional thoughts on this, will this be a waste of time?
No you are not too late just make sure you get good seed to soil contact. Doing right before a light rain will help that as you said. Here in NC its not that cold so the frost freeze thing is a gamble but I have always had good luck thickening up the plots by broadcasting some seed in early spring.
Yep you will be fine I rake my plot first before I seed to get leaves off and it works. I only overseed my plots now.
It's never too late to put down clover in my opinion. I'd broadcast right before a good rain and I'm sure you'll get decent germination.
Im about to leave to head to my dads place in upper Michigan jist looked at the weather its going to be 23 saturday night followed by chances of rain Monday and Tuesday and rain all day Wednesday. I got part of the plot raked off yesterday and decided to put off over seeding a week or two, going to get after some grass in the plot and see what clover comes back before I seed.
The property I have the clover plot on is 2hrs from home. When I got there it was covered in leaves so I took the time to hand rake the whole half acre. When I was finished with that I said the heck with it and bust out the walk behind rototiller and went to town. I broadcast some Heartland Clover and packed it down with a 1980 Honda 200 3 wheerler, it has nice big knobby balloon tires and works great as a cultipacker
This was the condensed version too. Tiller need a carb rebuild as well. Took it apart, soaked in carb cleaner overnight. Of course the gasket split during reassembly so had to make one of those as well. Was just planning on 15mins to overseed, turned into a day long project.
Still have not planted the clover have it sitting there in a bag ready to go. I have not been home much is part of the problem but the wether is not helping, little to no rain. I am going to have to irrigate I think, 1350' from the hydrant to the food plot.
I topseeded and mowed my clover plots yesterday. One didn’t need anything but mowed (beautiful looking and never planted, it naturally took over my plot), one was really spotty so it got topseeded and another had 2 blowdowns I cleared out from winter that were bare and got topseeded. My clover was 18-24” tall but rather weedy. I also planted clover/chicory 3 days ago. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
