It's an even year this year and that means we will be having the every other year elk camp. What Will does is incredible and very generous. Anyone is invited and it's a great way to get you feet wet hunting in the mountains. I will get in touch with Will to figure out the dates and such but I believe it will be September 15th-23rd. Several members from here have attended and will be happy to answer questions.

I want to say right around $611. Might have changed a little bit.

What major pieces of gear would someone need to get started with a camp like this?

To host your own you mean? You could go super basic. We have 3 big wall tents we the together. Middle one we use for eating and hanging out. Outer 2 are for sleeping. He also has 2 diesel heaters that make it nice and toasty. Really just need basic camping stuff to do this but some luxuries are nice to have.

A cot, money to pay for your share of groceries and other camp costs, good pair of broken in boots, snacks to eat while hunting and a tag.

+Sleeping bag, a bow and arrows with broadheads.

There are many other nice to haves: backpack, waste bladder, various weather gear, knife, gps/compass&map, various weather gear, camo, etc...but if these are barriers to entry, you still can probably get by, learn A LOT, build some friendships, have a fun week in the mountains and may just have an opportunity at a shot.

I think all in camp in 2016 except 1 was close enough for an opportunity on an elk...1 mule deer, a marmot, opportunity on a bear, several moose sightings.

Ability to shoot and a good attitude are also good to have but can't be bought.

    I'm tentative...If, I'm still in CO for week 2 and Will will put up with me again. ;) 20160921_115607.jpg 20160917_073715.jpg 20160918_074023.jpg 20160924_085313.jpg

It was the last day or two of the 2016 season, maybe the 9/23/16. A small group of us spiked out on a ridge at about 12,500 for a couple days. There was no snow at base camp.

It did get a wee but colder thatnight and we did have more than the minimum gear needed...

One thing to keep in mind. A hunter safety certification is a must for a tag. If you show up without one then your just camping. Colorado will accept another states cert. as proof.
