This last year bow hunting elk I only saw 3 other hunters over 50 ( I am taking a educated guess there). That was only in the area I was hunting. I'm only 56 and I have elk hunted since I was 16. I'm not in bad shape but I could be in a little better shape. I know age does catch up to you. I'm starting to get arthritis in my left hand and the mountain seems a little steeper. I love to archery hunt elk. When the day comes I cant draw a bow back I will use my crossbow. When I get to the point I cant hike very well I will do what I can and call and glass and take care of camp for the boys the best I can. My Question is how many of us out there over 50 still pursue elk with a bow?
I am over 50 though have not, yet, hunted elk. Sure think I would like to give it a try, so I hope guys over 50 can still manage to do it.
I am over 50. I started elk hunt las year. My knee got hurt but I will come back again. Mountain big for me but I will never given up Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I have bow hunted for elk twice past the age of 50. Both times in Colorado. Both hunts were very physically demanding but I enjoyed every minute of it. My best advice is to shed any extra pounds you may be carrying and try and get in the best physical shape possible. I would recommend swimming and most important of all get hydrated well before your hunt.
Will be 57 in June and headed to Colorado this fall. It’s an addiction.Plus it gives me a reason to get the winter weight off.
Didn't know there was an age limit. Only been bow hunting for elk the last two years. I just turned 65. Haven't found someone to hunt with here so I am still solo.
My elk hunting mentor was 71 when he shot his last elk. It was a cow with his rifle. He was just as excited as when I saw him take a 6 point 20 years earlier. After that he would come up to elk camp and spend a couple days and share stories and wisdom. The last three years of his life he couldn't come up so we would bring him a few steaks from the back strap and share pictures and stories. Its just out of the original 6 of us that archery hunted elk from the mid 80's thru the 90's. I'm the only one that still archery hunts. Myself and a very good friend archery hunted since the 70's. Of course one passed away and another one doesn't hunt any more. The other two rifle hunt. I did really luck out, Out of four boys three enjoy bow hunting. Thanks for the reply's everybody. Its funny after the elk hunt I lose about 5lbs.
I shoot trap on Thursdays with a few guys and I'm the kid! We have an 87 and 86 year old. as well as a few between us. My Dad doesn't hunt but is still going strong at 86 and Mom is 83. They're off running around Arizona somewhere in their RV. It's mind over matter. If you don't mind, it don't matter. Haha.
I celebrated my 60th birthday hunting elk last September. The mountain gets bigger but we managed to cover about 40 miles in 6 days. It was awesome! My last tag was in 2009 so I guess I'm looking at 68 for my next elk hunt. I'm finding that as I get older, my hunting buddies find other things to do. All my deer hunting this year was done alone. I plan to hunt as long as the good Lord allows me to.

I am 70 years and plan on hunting in Idaho this year for the first time...hunted Oregon prior...with several opportunities. Looking for a senior hunting partner for 2018 Idaho hunt...archery in McCall unit. Will be doing allot of scouting this spring and summer.
I think that is great Grasshopper. We seem to lose a lot of bow hunters after 50. I was just a little curious why.
