I have a couple spots I am going to open up on my personal leases for a couple non residents. Basically I have an opportunity to lease additional farms and I can't afford to do so alone without giving up some of my current properties, which I do not want to do. So I have decided to try to help pay for the leases by finding a few hunters that want a DIY ish hunt on some prime farms. I'm not an outfitter, so I'm not putting you up or feeding you, but I have a couple good farms with big deer on them I don't want to let go, so I'm just trying to cover my lease costs.

I'd be interested in finding out more for 2019 as I'll have 3 preference points by then. :tu:

What's the best way to go about applying for non-resident preference points for an Iowa license? I always wanted to hunt in Iowa!

The points you purchase through the Iowa DNR website. You would create an account with them. When the points are available to purchase they send you an email letting you know along with on their website, etc. I want to say it's later in the spring. April or May.

I’m in the same situation here in KY and having to do the same thing. That said I just got my 3rd Iowa Pref point last year and have been considering whether or not to give Iowa a try in 2018. Unfortunately I don’t have the funding for my 2018 KY leases worked out yet either so it’s pretty tough for me to think about funding an Iowa trip at this point. What zone/area are you in? Is it safe to assume that 3 points is a slam dunk where you are? Sounds like you are talking about selling a hunt rather than offering a partial lease partnership. Am I correct?

I am open to either selling a hunt or subleasing. The farms are in zone 5. 3 points used to be guaranteed for a bow tag, but last year some folks with 3 points didn't draw. So I would say minimum of 3, but 4 to guarantee draw.

That being said, you can draw a gun tag with 1 point.

Is it true if you miss a year of buying pref points then the points you have purchased vanish?

Great, because I missed last year and haven't checked! I know some states if you miss a year you essentially start over. Boooo!
