Looks like this guy shot a true giant. Anyone out there got any more details? http://wgntv.com/2017/11/13/hunter-says-he-bagged-39-point-buck-after-years-of-stalking-the-deer/
Well, good for him. However I'm always extremely skeptical over deer like that. It's not natural for a deer to grow that much bone without help and it's not very realistic for someone to invest the resources into a deer like that to grow it and leave it free ranging. I'm probably just jealous.
I don’t know, some of these indiana bucks I’ve been seeing are making me sick to my stomach almost. I know I’m jealous!
I guess people are usually skeptical when a true big one is killed. I would have never thought I'd see some of the bucks I did on the little farm I was hunting this year and I was certainly surprised. I guess every year there are a couple hunters in the right place at the right time. I'm not necessarily jealous but more so hoping I'm the hunter in the right place at the right time too some day.
What draws my skepticism is the "I've been chasing him for 4 years". Chasing a giant for 4 years likely means he was either a ginormous 2 year old or the story leading to the deer is false. Would love to see a cementum annuli on a lot of these deer just for story comparisons. Just don't see him as a 7 1/2 year old.
I can't imagine... or would certainly hope... that hole was either the exit from a weird bounce off bone or a flinch and lucky shot. I can't think of a good reason an educated and ethical hunter would intentionally aim there. But yes, I agree seeing that wound makes you wonder.
It the story it did say his father shot him 11 days before. I bet that's were his father hit him. It almost looks like that hole was healed up a little.
I was barely in the lobby today when one of our security team asked me if I had seen or heard this. That is a super trophy and I hope it was fair chase. I'm not really in it for that entirely, but I can honestly say it is part of it and would be totally fine if I got a shot at something even half that number of points! And would ya look at that...he's not even wearing a lucky watch. The nerve.
While I do not know the guy that killed this deer I do live about 10 minutes down the road from where it was killed. I actually know people whose neighbors would get pictures of the deer behind their houses and from everything I know the kill was 100% legit. My understanding of how this deer got so massive was because it mainly stayed around residential areas that weren’t hunted, hence the fairly large amount of trail camera pictures near peoples houses. Basically everyone in the area knew about the buck but someone finally shot him and it’s pretty cool. Believe it or not, there’s another buck almost as big running around the same area.
No problem. The place this deer was shot is not too far from my grandpas back 40 so hopefully one day those genetics will end up in my hunting spot!
