Has anyone looked at the new Illinois 2017-18 Hunters digest? I looked at it this morning and they have a new regulation for archery poundage. They've lowered it from 40# to 30#. I don't have a problem with as I'm currently just at 41#, now I don't have to worry so much if I end up having to drop the weight. What do ya'll think?
That's crazy talk I would love to see some stats on penetration from 30lb's I don't assume it's passing through often
I'm fairly new to bow hunting so I don't know enough to say whether it is too low or not. I wonder what caused them to decide to lower it? Maybe to get more youth involved or more women (though I'm a woman and I started out bow hunting with 40# on my bow).
My daughter at age 15 shoots 45 so I do not believe that it's a question of involving children. There is some hidden agenda here. But then again I think it's 35 in NY.
I personally think it's a little low. I know people these days are always super excited to get their young kids out hunting and this weight would allow them to do so but to me it just opens the door for more wounded deer because you will need excellent shot placement to make up for lack of penetration in some cases.

That is low.... at 30lbs. broadhead selection, arrow spine/weight, and shot placement need to be near perfect for good results. Even on a small doe i doubt you would get a passthrough. Sent from my SM-S120VL using Tapatalk
30 seems a bit low... You'll need dead on shots or it'll be a lost deer... I personally stay at 60 but I've had black bear show up while on the stand... Also it keeps me from ever thinking about a lack of penetration... Sent from my LG-H830 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
never seen a CO (warden) with a draw weight scale but who knows. Not many manufacturers produce a bow at that low of a range that could even be outfitted to hunt. Mission comes to mind. If your kid (or WAG) can't pull 35+ then leave them at home or hand them a camera. When I bought my wife's first bow this summer she was having a tough time pulling 40 and I flat told her that if it was too much then she was going to have to go back to a x-bow for deer. She stuck with it.
