    We had just finished eating dinner last night. We sat down on the couch for just a few minutes before heading to the barn to work on the planter when we seen a Tom breeding a hen!! Maybe with all of the warm weather, the early season will be a little better this year. I know it is going to be REALLY green and tough to see very far if we are hunting in the timber.

    I take it your season has already started?

    It is great to know where they are roosting but not the best idea to hunt them there. Before you know it they won't be roosting there anymore.

    stay off in the perimeter and try to contend with one set of eyes instead of a whole flock.

    Foodplot thanks for the advice, will do, there is a huge field that I think they use to travel back to their site, tomorrow I might set up decoys on the edge of the field in the afternoon. TC, it is hard to recognize the gobblers in the morning, I am slowing learning to recognize them better, meaning males and females I think the more I see the easier it is to recognize and tell the difference between male and female. The only way for me to tell so far that a male is a male is because they get fluffy, meaning strut. And the gobble. Some say to look at their heads because their heads are different but it hasn't come natural to tell the difference. A deer I can tell a mile away if is a buck or doe but turkeys I am still learning. Thanks guys.

    Toms will always be darker than hens, meaning they will appear black where hens will appear to be brown.

    look for the beard sticking out of the front of their chest. most states bearded hens are also legal to shoot. gobblers heads are red, white, or bright blue. ALWAYS! hens have dull blueish color to their head.

    My bow broke: had a tom come running charging at my decoy and I was behind it, from about 125 yards away he came running, About 5 yards away when I jump on my knees and pull back to shoot my string felt of the wheel. [​IMG][​IMG]

    Well got my buddy his first tom( may be on a different team lol) last night and we switched chairs and didn't have anything come in close enough for me to double up!

    Obviously I need AZ as a guide. I took our oldest son out this past weekend for his first youth hunt. Saturday was great. We didn't kill anything but he had a great time!! Sunday, the weather was horrible. Wind was howling all day long. We will be trying again during the regular season!!!

    Well South Dakotas opening week didn't quite go as planned. My buddy and I hunted hard but the birds we are hunting are extremely pressured and not cooperative. They do not like hen calls at all and as soon as we use them in the mornings the toms quit talking altogether. We figured that out pretty quick so we switched to a gobble tube. They must have never heard one before because we got them fired up and to gobble on the ground for the first time all week. Using the gobble tube we got three toms to work our way, until they saw the decoys. As soon as they saw them they turned around and we didn't hear from them again. Needless to say its turning out to be quite the challenge but hopefully one makes a mistake sooner or later.
