Team 4 Check In

I hope things stay the same at our place. There are tons of turkeys hanging out there right now. I need to move a couple of cameras around to see what is going on down in the bottoms.

What do you guys look for when setting cameras up for turkeys? Ill be making a trip back to Iowa this weekend to put some up but I'm not 100% sure what to look for. The area is fairly hilly and mainly forested but it does have a fair amount of small AG fields as well. My roommate and I have quite a few on camera here in South Dakota but I will be on my own back home putting out cameras and still have a lot to learn.

 

Try areas that are greening up with new growth or try areas that are close to cover with beans/corn that have been disked under or just harvested. We are seeing the turkeys at our place every day in the area where we disked the food plot under. We've burnt the bottom off so I'm suspecting that they are hanging out down there as well. They come up to the food plot from that direction. I'm just going off a hunch.........
They don't prefer areas that they can't see across or in areas where the grass is getting too tall.

 

can't really give advice. we have to hunt our turkeys in the woods.

 

Look for tracks, they like to roost a lot of times near water facing east, they like the sun. Sun comes from the east,My friend set up a camera to confirm or deny where they are traveling to or from and at what time, we already know where they roost so I was in the spot tonight and have gobblers within 50 yards until they fly up, i set up my pop up ground blind before they got there and when I got there 20 mins before sun light went down had turkey flight like I have never seen before, I left when the sun went down. Going back in the morning before the sun go up, going to be an interesting morning.

Yall wanna know how prepared I am for turkey season? My groundblind is frozen to the ground in my deer hunting spot, all my trail cams are on winter deer trails, and I don't have arrows built for this season yet. I am golden!

 

I see these are "Johns Trees" but does John let you hunt there?

 

You're just too busy shed hunting, I get it.

Hey guys, just thought i'd share my life story. I pretty much turkey hunt to get out of the house on a mini vacation since hibernating all winter. As of last year I started going with my bow and not using a blind. My goal has been set on the ultimate challenge and beating those darn turkey eyeballs. Last year I had a couple encounters but never got close enough for a shot. I basically sit on a little stool behind trees, in deadfalls etc and try to position my decoys to get the birds facing another direction to draw my bow. I got one main spot i'm really going to focus on this year as I always tend to see birds at this spot/field and last 2 seasons they were always in that spot either after I left or when I came back to go to that spot I could see them strutting in the spot. I'm hoping to try and wait them out this year and get a shot. I'll be going with my Halon 6 and a rage head.

Also, this year my younger sister who knows apsolutely nothing about hunting (20 yr old blonde valley girl sister) who last year said she would like to go with me. Well I mentioned it to her this week and she is going to tag a long so i'll be trying to teach her the ropes of my style of turkey hunting. Usually i'm a run and gun type person instead of sitting in one spot hoping and praying.

Well thats me, I'm trying to stick with my goal as i've gotten birds with a gun already so figured this is the next best challenge since I love huntng with my bow. My season i'll have 3 days to hunt. May 3rd-May5th.

 

Sorry for the late check in guys. Our season doesn't start until the last week in April for Ohio and the first saturday in May for PA. Hopefully they're still a little fired up by then.

Haven't had rain in 3-4 months so this is a great sight to see!!!

Gentlemen, and ladies. Any way bow hunters! Killing a bird with a bow is harder than what I though, I've been at a roost site at least 6 times maybe even more, every time I went to pull back the birds saw me and took off like a ghost. My first turkey season for me and I am learning a lot.
