With some Rack Wax, a couple fresh antlers and some quality time you will have a dream to shed hunt with.
Thanks guys. I hope it turns out well, I've never trained one to shed hunt. My old Weim didn't like the hard antler in her soft mouth but she was trained for birds from the time she was 8 weeks old. She'd find them but wouldn't pick them up and bring them back, lol.
Been working with my yellow lab some and she didn't like the soft Dog Bone antler but loves the real deal.
The best way to start is with the real fresh antler. You will want to use Rack Wax as the pup continues to find the antler just to freshen the oder. Then over time you will be able to wein off the wax.
I can definitely say I won't spoil my nephew...I don't have one, lol. My sis bought it for herself and (probably a lot) for my brother in law. Lots of controversy around the "Silver Lab" thing. Purists really rant on about there is no such thing that they are obviously a cross of a lab and a weimaraner. AKC allows them registered under the brown coloration but doesn't have a stand alone category for "silver". I looked at them back years ago before I bought my late Weim and almost went that way but decided to go with a pure bred Wiem instead. Personally from all the vids and pics I've seen, I see many shared physical and behavioral traits with weims. Maybe most notably is an odd action of laying on their back and sprawling their legs out. Other dogs probably do that some but it seems weims have the trait bred into them as they all even sleep that way from time to time. I've seen many of the silver labs do the same thing. But, whatever, not that I care one way or another, I can't see a cross doing anything but improving the lab part, lol. If they are a full blood lab, it's a cool color and I always like stuff that stands apart from the norm. I get to meet the little bugger this evening for the first time. She's bringing him down to visit and for me to show her how to start his training so she can work with him on a regular basis at home. They named him Benelli.
YEP he'll be your nephew. lol My GSP does the same thing. Sleeps like a star fish on his back. Still hilarious walking into a room when he's sleeping and seeing all 4's up in the air.
Weims and GSP's share much of the same lineage I believe. Damn Germans are clever sob's, ROFL. I'd kind of like to have a GSP.
He's the most high energy dog I've ever had. He's just over a year and starting understand when it's time to go and when it's time to chill. But my god he will run. Just camped last week for our family reunion. 3 days of solid non stop running. Every time we looked up he'd be out in the pasture nose to the ground with a fast gate or nose in the wind with a fast lope. Beautiful to watch run, hunt, point.
They're beautiful dogs and yes very high energy, weims are the same way. I've had friends with GSP's and I've hunted over a few.
