From what I have heard it is just a temporary thing since they have had such a bad winter out there, the added stress could start killing animals.
A Western shed ban? It's racist, sexist, LGTBIQTNTONOMATOPOEIAphobic, speciesist, and xenophobic. I'm obviously for it.
Where I'm at in illinois we can't shed hunt the public land by us or even go in to walk or hike or even fish we cannot scout either. We can only go in to scout Sept 1st till opening day but that's it. Or you'll get tickets for trespassing and what ever else they wana pin on you.
Would not be very hard to talk me out of going snowshoeing up a mountain looking for sheds in deep snow, I'll pass.
Last year, there was a giant 200+ typical buck in the southern Cook County Forest preserve near where I live. Like potential world record. He was frequently visible from a main road grazing in the afternoons. There were so many people trying to find his sheds that they had to post extra forest preserve cops to keep people out. They were worried that they would harass him to death. I'm pretty sure I remember reading that they eventually had to catch him and cut his antlers off at the base just so people would cut it out. People were thinking they were going to sell them and make craploads of money. Point is, there is a commercial profit mentality to a lot of shed hunting and generally speaking people should not directly profit from public land/resources.
I like that they did that. In Utah you need to take a class before you can shed hunt. It's coming to other states too.
A class to shed hunt? Call me crazy...but this is crazy. I get it...the snow is bad. An ethical hunter shouldnt risk wild game for his own benefit. But a class to shed hunt? And potential bans? Does this extend to private property? And does this mean you cant use the public land for anything at all?
