Looking to fuel the need to have equipment set up and ready for a Elk hunt and possibly a Moose hunt. My set up right now is a Mathews HTX No Cam,70#, 28.5in draw, 29in Gold tip hunter pros, blazer vanes, 7in wrap, lumanock, and tipped with 100gr head. I use Rage hypos for Deer. I figured I'd want a COC fix blade for Elk or Moose or do I? I've been doing research on NAP Hellrazors, Muzzy Phantoms, G5 Montec. Any advice or what has worked for you? I want to try to eliminate as many variables as possible. Thanks Beetle
Muzzy phantoms. We used them for years. I think my father's personal record is 7 deer with the same phantom head (shoot sharpen and reuse) Deadly head and easy to re-sharpen. Dont sell out Slick Tricks. That would be a great option to look at. All steel. Flies great. Easy to sharpen.
Magnus Snuffers SS. Sharp is key not large cutting diameter. Tough enough and heavy enough to get inside.
Slick Trick for large game, Elk, Moose. I also shoot hypos for deer but when I have elk hunted I switch to slick tricks. I have shot several black bear with rages and have killed all of them with very short tracking jobs. Shot placement is the most important factor with any game and any broadhead.
I used Slick Trick Magnums on my elk hunt last year. I have been using them on deer for four years now. Killed a coyote with one last night; arrow buried almost to the fletchings in the ground, cleaned the dirt off and the head is ready to kill again. The broadheads hold up incredibly well. Fixed blade for certain. (many western states do not allow mechanicals) I love German Kinetics but they like Solids while great heads, are pricey. Slicks have taken many animals for me too.
Should be fine using the Hypodermic, but if you are worried about penetration, go with the Hypodermic+P.
I've been looking at Solids with the 1/2" bleeder but the price is what is making me really look at other options. I'm doing some research on Dirt NAP DRT right now, they look similar to the solids, I'm sure not near the quality. I'm sure any quality fix blade will do, But it is always worth a outside opinion.

Anyone had luck on Carbon express XT 4 blade? I'm really try to talk myself out of Solids but i like the design for Elk or moose. Granted I've never hunted elk or moose yet so I'm very open to advice. Everyones input is being wrote down and Im doing research on them.
My buddy used the xt-4 carbon express this year. They are a P.O.S. Two shots at deer from a tree stand and both heads bent where they screw in. Look at the 2 blade Helix. They are amazing the penetration you'll get.
Any sharp compact fixed blade is where I'd start. Muzzy, slick tricks, etc. I personally like the QAD exodus in a 125gr. I shot a buck last week at a real steep angle. It went through a rib on each side, entry and exit. Then Out through the chest before going back in THROUGH the shoulder shattering it. That's right it went back into the left leg and smashed it to pieces. Very impressed and they group right with my field points.
I played with them for awhile and still have a few. They are good quality for the price but I always sharpen them some more. Once you have them sharp spin test them. I shot a deer that turned at the last minute with them. It hit the rear ham and continued through the entire deer out the base of the neck in front of the off side shoulder. This was with a 27" draw and at the time 60# bow too. Blood trail was awesome. PM me your address and I'll send you a few to test out for yourself. I see muzzy phantom on your signature. The design of that head is awesome and they are tough. If you already have and the bow is tuned for them I would certainly feel comfortable using them. Lots of other solid heads out there.
