Never have I ever hunted more then I have this season. HOURS ON HOURS ON HOURS without seeing any of the buck I have on camera. Yesterday was different. I decided to switch stands midday due to the wind. About 100 yards from my stand I hear crashing thru the woods so I assume I bumped a deer so I immediately duck behind a stump. A doe runs the trail in front of me and I hear something else coming, it was a thick 8 I've been chasin for 2 years. I draw back, set my pin on his lungs and release. The arrow sailed right over his back... My sight was set on 60 yards (was practicing the day before) and he was no more then 20 yards broadside.. ROOKIE MISTAKE I KNOW. I have shot many buck before, but I thnk due to not seeing any in daylight this year I panicked and rushed and didn't set the pin. Although I couldn't capitalize, seeing him gives me hope! Use it as a learning experience. I have forgot to change mine back as well but never let an arrow fly. I promise you wont make that mistake again.
Better luck next time. Don't feel bad; I killed my first bow deer on 11/5 and then on election day, got busted trying to draw on two different does within five minutes of each other. LOL.
I made the same mistake 2 weeks ago..except I had my sight on 20 and thought the buck was 35 and aimed a tad high, went right over him..s*** happens, even to master hunter. Normally my kentucky windage is on.
Just one more reason why single pin sights suck ***... I missed a big buck once with a single pin sight because he was chasing a doe and by the time I ranged him. got the sight turned to 35 yards and got my release hooked up he was long gone. Switched back to a multi pin sight the next day!
arrows flying all over the damn place...to be fair the buck snuck up on me, had little time to react and had to letter' rip while I could.

I couldn't disagree more. It has nothing to do with which sight you're using, that's just a case of operator error!
I have been back and forth with single and multiple pin sights for the past several years.....both have advantages and disadvantages. Like the OP, I have forgotten to change my single pin back to 20 yards, but it was at home which caused me to shoot an arrow well over the target....lesson learned. Most who use a single pin know how to gap for reasonable distances, which a multiple pin user also does because pins do not cover every concievable range in the woods. If you are hunting from a stand, ranging ahead of time can remove the necessity of doing so on the fly when an animal is walking in. I killed a doe at 30 yards with my 20 yard pin this fall by knowing my setup and the distances around my stand. When still-hunting or stalking, things are much more dynamic and the hunter needs to develop the skills to be efficient. Everyone makes miscues in the woods....
It happens to best in some sort or way. At least you know he is still in the area. Get back out and take him. Good luck.
