Got the last of my stands hung. Pretty excited about the last one. Soybeans in front and a low area I know they move behind me.
Not much this weekend I did get to check a camera the other day on a property I was doing final touches before I leave it till it gets hunted and found this buck making frequent appearances. He hangs with two smaller bucks that aren't much smaller but they take ****ty pictures unfortunately. I have day time pics of him as well but not as good as these ones.
Since fawns started dropping and moving around more. I had primarily bucks on camera all spring then late June or early July the bucks were gone and it was all does and fawns. Is that bad? I just assumed that I've the rut kicked in the does would bring in the bucks.
Maybe you just aren't putting your cameras in the right spots? If you have any oaks dropping now you might check there. Bean fields are gold unless the leaves are turning yellow. Honestly I'm not too concerned about it. I know there's a bunch of oaks around and they're probably starting to drop acorns. There's soybeans and corn around, plus my 3 food plots and the neighbor has a pretty good food plot as well. But I also know there's some big fellas back there so it should be good. Won't find out until I can get I a stand.
remember the bucks are trying to pack on enough fat to last them through the rut. if there are acorns that is where they will be since they yield the most fat content. does will bring bucks but just have to wait til late October or prime rut. try to find where they are now or you will have some silent sits. move your camera asap or your going to miss half the season while they're feeding someplace else.
I'm sure you're completely right. Unfortunately the two places I know for sure that there's acorns are both pretty surrounded by water right now. I mean waist deep type water without crossing onto land I don't have permission to be on. The smaller stand of oaks I might be able to get to but in the past I haven't had great luck with cameras there because the cows can still get there this time of year. The soybeans would be my best bet for pictures on a food source outside of the food plots. From looking at tracks in the sandy soil from that field there's definitely a couple bucks spending time in that field so that might be an option for camera placement.
What are y'alls thoughts on this? For the past couple weeks I've been in contact with the DNR and they confirmed its a a young cougar that I got this pick of. I talked to my local wardens and they stated that others in the area have seen up to 2 different cats in the past month and a half. Makes me little sketched out to go to my tree stand bright and early in the am this fall.
I'd definitely make sure I had something with me just in case. Not something I would want to run into in the dark. There's not supposed to be any of those around this area but saw a buddy got a picture of one on his camera about 20 miles from us. Naturally the DNR said there's none of those around and questioned the authenticity of the photo.
Welp.. So much for the food plots. They are set to go 4 feet under water by tonight. UGH!!! Hopefully the stands and make it through. I'm sure I'll lose half my cameras though. Not a good way to start a new deer season. Sorry, just needed to vent a bit.
