I guess era isn't the best wording. I don't have a specific era because different amendments were ratified at different times, even after things started getting bad. We've had some great amendments ratified after the 1930s but government really started to go to hell after The New Deal and other nonsense wasteful social programs.

How is this a trap?

 

Is this a hard concept to imagine?

Tax less and let people have more of their own money.

Less government intervention on social issues like gay marriage...if you want to get married to another man, have at it.

Stronger state rights.

According to who? How are they living "better"? Tell me what the Constitution or ratified amendments didn't provide that government is now providing (AND SHOULD BE PROVIDING).

No it absolutely is not a different topic. If I could forklift the Constitution and our ratified amendments and slap it on 1776, that would be the best "era". I simply said our best days are behind us. If I hear one person say that our society is too complicated for our original founding document (our ratified amendments included) I will never be able to take them seriously again. Government is a set of principles and methodology of how it should run and the same principles can be applied today, the time period makes no difference. Government is ever growing and meddling in crap it has no business meddling in.

Are you honestly saying that government is the reason people are wealthy or educated? WOW.

Government gave US the ABILITY to be wealthy and educated, they simply set the principles and form of economy and gave states rights to allow us to get there ourselves.

 

Crime rates are down, less people are hungry, healthcare is better.....people are living better

I see what you are saying but I am talking about our government's best days, at it's most healthy and lean state. The growth of our government and the state of our lives being good are NOT synonymous. Imagine how good we COULD be if government still ran at that healthy lean state. We aren't where we are as a wealthy and educated society because of the growth of our government. We are where we are today because our founding document and the whole purpose of a free Republic is to allow wealth and education to thrive. If you look at health care costs post Obamacare and average income being down after the past x years of government growth, handouts and taxes we are regressing. So what gives? All I'm trying to say is, state of government and state of society isn't synonymous, so how are we better off and according to who? We are closer to a collapse as a society because we have gone away from our founding principles. What is better about this? Temporary wealth and success that has no correlation to the state of our current government?

Is there something I said that you disagree with specifically? Do you agree that we would be even better off than we are now if government was still running as lean as it was originally in terms of efficiency and less involved in our lives? For example, government didn't cause the great depression but it felt the need to provide relief and rations (it didn't help mind you). Is it the government's job to do that? The New Deal's purpose then was similar to that of the auto bailout and extending unemployment benefits of today. My answer is no, they shouldn't. The second that government plays favorites in business or a particular group of people, regardless of intention or feel-goods that it gives, a piece of our founding principles chips away. It's the same as Franklin's notable quote of giving up liberty for security. As good as it may make people feel or what good it may provide, it erodes our founding principles and ends up taking something away. So although we may be living good, there's no reason we shouldn't be based on what we are founded on, and additionally I believe we are being throttled of our true potential due to our government.
