How many stands do you normally set? In the past few years, I've not had many huntable acres, and have only had 3-4 stands. I've got 5 different farms to hunt this year, and have several good looking options on them. I'm going to start the year with at least 8-10 stand sites, setup for morning/afternoon and different winds. I'm really looking forward to this season. I've currently got 5 cameras and mineral sites setup, and will put out 3-4 more cameras, and maybe another mineral site or two more in the next couple of weeks. My daughter will be leaving in August for her mission trip, so I will probably hunt more this year than I have in a long time.
I feel like you have a good start but one piece of advice is to not have your heart set on them. Be prepared to move and make adjustments as the season progresses. As the patterns change throughout the year and with cameras, it should help you narrow down spots. I've had some of my best luck on stands I sat the first time after just setting them up once I get a handle on what they are doing. Best of luck to you in the upcoming season!
All of this land is farm land so all I have to hunt are little woods, creeks, funnels etc. I have my selected sites in pinch points/bottle necks, etc. I probably won't move any stands that I put up, but I have more stands to hang if I need to make a move.
Sounds like you're going to need some help hh. Always remember and never forget: "elkguide......... has bow........... does travel!!!!!"
Some people are very slow learners and have to have it repeated over and over till it finally sinks in!!!!
I would suggest getting a mobile hunting set up. Get a light hang on stand and some light sticks that way you can move and hang a tree stand in just a few minutes. A climber wouldn't be a bad idea either, you just have to have the right trees for them! Good luck!
I've got a climber, and use it when I need to. I also have two light hang ons and 20' climbing sticks. I'm ready!!! I just wish I had more time to hunt! BTW. One of these farms is loaded with beech trees. I've never hunted in woods with beech. Do deer like beechnuts like they do acorns?
On my family Property and my lease, I kind of break up the properties into about 20 acre block sections. In each block I try to have about 3 to 5 of a combination of permanent stands, hang on sets, and climb ready trees. That is about typical for my properties. So on the If I'm hunting public it's free wheelin.
We have about 50 stands on 400 acres. A little overkill but I like having multiple options for every wind direction Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
yeah, lol. I rode the new 300 acres for about 45 minutes Saturday.... Found 2 more stands. The neighbor has the back 200 acres of the farm pretty much as his play ground. I'm going to look at the creek bottom woods next weekend. Hopefully find a promising travel route there, but the back part is definitely used more. I was talking to the daughter yesterday, and she informed me that there was a lot more land across the road from their house than I realized. There's a good draw there that deer travel. I've seen them cross the road there multiple times, and a lot get hit by cars there each year. Will check it out next weekend.
I already told you I did. Two 7' ladders in sweet places. Both on telephone poles in mowed 50 acre CRP fields so you will be able to see the deer coming from a long way....Should be great for early season bow hunts....
Seriously though, I've got 4 good stand sites on my in-laws. Might come up with another depending on what the cameras show. I've got 2 more cameras out on the place near Mammoth Cave. I think both of them will be good spots. That's where I had the big bucks last year... Hopefully it won't be a **** storm of errors leading up to the bow opener....
