Actually the mount captures the look the deer had on it's face when it was laying there dead, some people want their mount to look like the buck did before it was killed.
Awesome buck! But, I agree that the mount is pretty bad. But, if your buddy is happy with it then all is well.
Exactly what I was thinking as well Justin. I was going to take a picture of one of my dads buck to post for comparison but you beat me to it. The mount is horrible in my opinion. Looks fake and not realistic at all. I would definitely be going back or find someone else who can re-do it. Your mount Justin looks FANTASTIC, honestly one of the best I've seen based on the picture.
Not true with todays mounts if you keep them out of direct sunlight. Heck I have a bear mount from 1991 that still looks good.
Agree! ^ It seems his scoring abilities are on par with his taxidermy skills! lol What a shame to do that to a buck of that caliber.
The taxidermist needs to be told he did crap work in hopes he improves instead of churning out crap mounts all over the county.
Probably had some to do with it went down in a creek. Kill pics where after pulled it out of little water and mud.
What an awesome story and an awesome buck. I do have to agree with the above on the mount. I learned that same lesson this year. My first buck looks atrocious compared to the guy I am using now. It's the little individual details that really make a huge difference. Gordy takes pride in his work and I am always happy to brag about him. Here are some pics. I guess that could be true with shoddy taxi work or if they aren't well taken care of. I have several mounts that are between 10-20 years old. They still look as good as the day I picked them up.
That second one almost looks like the same form just different head turn. Looks good tho bud. Overall I'm not really sure what to think bout it, more I've looked at it and saw it again after work today it's really noticeable about the work that was done on it. But not much can really say or do its not mine.
At least you know where not to take your future bucks until he improves. I agree with Sota, This kid probably wants to do this for a living and will need constructive criticism so he can be successful in the future. You'd be doing him a favor in the long run by emailing him this thread.
Great buck, but I have to agree with Justin. No disrespect, just being honest. To me he looks like his rack doesnt match the head and neck, too thin or something. Again, great buck, but the mount could have been better.
The "tell tale" in someone who knows what a whitetail deer should look like is found in the fore head. In a whitetail, there is a dish shape but for some reason most mounts come without the dish and unless your taxi takes the time to shape it, it will look like your friend's. Jason's buck has the dish in his forehead. Jason's buck also has the skin wrinkles that would be found in a live deer as he turned his head. Still an incredible deer.
My taxidermist is the best in the nation. Look at the detail in my buck from last year. It's all in the eyes.... I can post his info if anyone is interested.
