Any input on fishing the flats for the first time? Planning to target fluke, redfish, snook, and trout. My fluke set up for the northeast is a 7'6" med rod with 20 lb braid. Is this a good set up? And any good places to fish around the Fort Lauderdale area.

I have been fishing near shore in the Tampa area, last trip down we kayaked mangrove bays you could see them swimming in groups chasing minnows. That is the thing that sucks about fishing the gulf, none of the bait shops sell live minnows. Works great to just throw a minnow on a hook and let it swim.

Most of the guides will go out with a cast net before they take clients out. They throw a lot of chum out too. I like throwing cranks too, do not waste your money on shrimp. Cast over the grass areas not bare sand, or at least try have part of your retrieve go over grass.

No worries about messing with shrimp. I'll go into anaphylactic shock just touching it

I have always wondered how a Zara spook would work on the flats kinda hard to work them right without being on a raised platform like a casting deck though.
