I have a friend that lives on a few acres of land with huge rows of trees. According to him, there are packs living in the trees and there are pet dogs running around in the area. Obviously he wants them gone. I'll be using a Hoyt at 60lbs, with an electric call and a moving rabbit decoy. I just dont know where to sit and wait on a tree line without a blind. Are they really as skittish as I've read?
They're indeed a little cagey by nature, getting them into bow range is a challenge. Make sure you call into the wind or at least cross wind. Set the caller and decoy away from you to keep their attention off of you. Good luck.
Hard feat with bow to call them in. They usually know something is up by the time they get that close. Having the decoy will definitely help. You will have to be super concealed to draw.
I hunt lots of jackals and I'm sure they have very similar habits to coyotes. A natural blind will help, make sure the the call is in a position where they coyote will get close enough to you. When the coyote does get up to the call and decoy it will realize its fake and will most likely run away. When they are in range, don't take your time because they won't stand still for long.
They will almost always circle downwind. So set up to shoot downwind. Tough to do with a bow. Shot this the other day. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
I Love bow hunting but when it comes to yotees, use a rifle or shotgun. About the only time I would ever shoot a coyote with a bow is when one happened along while in the deer stand. Kill every one you see.
Good luck. Its almost impossible to do what your about to attempt. I'm from western ma. and our coyotes have part wolf blood in em. IMO the hardest animal you will ever hunt. Iv'e made over 50 setups in 2016 with an electronic caller and a 22/250 and only have called in 2 with only 1 shot and a miss at 150yds. Coyote hunting makes deer hunting look like childs play. I do agree with others though that your best chance at em is by accident while deer hunting. Good luck!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the tips everyone, I'm expecting this to be very challenging. Nice picture! Has anyone ever used a camping tent as a blind? Hahaha
if you don't have a ground blind, a couple layers of camouflage burlap brushed in has worked well on deer and turkeys. pretty quick to set up. have not yet tried it on coyotes
I'd set a trap line instead, or rifle. Getting them in bow range is super challenging, as many others have mentioned here...and no, a camping tent will not work as a blind.
I would mention, as soon as you see them coming in go ahead and draw and be prepared to hold. I have been busted on the draw a few times. Now I draw and hold as soon as I see them headed my way and got one this year and took hair off a second one. He was 37 yards and I thought he was 42. Best of luck! It is possible. I call them from a tree stand though.
