Just curious what is the worst hunting advice you have received. Either from a newbie know it all, a well intended friend or whoever. I love shopping around at wally world or wherever and hearing the local talk about what works and what doesn't... anyone have anything good, or bad?
Wear the fox hat, I never understood what my elders meant. Then I got it and shoot the bucks regular.
Gargle the doe urine so your breath doesn't stink, and make sure if you use deodorant to get the evercalm brand.
I would have laughed at that but then my imagination kicked in and I started to almost taste the doe piss and barfed.
The first thing you do after shooting a deer is cut its throat to drain the blood. My first few deer looked like jack the ripper went to work on them.
Out of curiousity, why is that bad advice? unless your planning on doing a shoulder mount isn't it good to slit the throat to drain the blood? wouldn't that only be beneficial for your meat quality?
Not making this up, my neighbor told me to buy a cowbell and wear it around my waist when I walked to my stand, I'm 31 now and was 16 then, he was in his 40's at the time of this advice. He claimed that the deer would think I was a cow then come to fight me, since they "hated cows" which is odd since we both hunted different areas and neither had cows within miles of the woods. And yes I did see his bell that he kept attached to his atv, probably explains why I had never seen him kill anything bigger than a 3 point! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Probably because it's a waste of time, a deer generally bleeds out about all it's going to when it dies from a mortal shot to the vitals. About all the blood that's locked up in the meat is pretty much where it's going to stay without being put in to soak in salt water and ice for a few hours/days.
Rinse out the chest cavity with water when its hanging. Only this year did I learn it promotes bacteria growth and is only needed to be done when gut shot.
When I walk up to a deer they are normally already dead and have bled a lot from the holes I punched through their lungs. I don't believe slitting the throat will accomplish anything if their heart has stopped beating. If the deer is still alive slitting the throat with a knife sounds dangerous to me as well.
The heart would have to still be pumping for this to be productive. By the time you get a deer hung, you've already cleaned it and most of the remaining blood has congealed and isn't going anywhere. This is why they "stick" a pig, or slit the jugular and let it bleed out, the heart pumps the blood out and thus removes a lot of the iron taste from the meat.
Had one guy tell me that when ever you walk up on a deer you shot kick it in the nose to make sure it's dead.
