Here are some of todays pics! I had jumped the buck that this antler belongs to but then I saw three bucks walking together a bit later and one looked like him with no antler. I did not find it but will be on the search again this week. Three bucks were fully shed and one nice one with full rack. There was a bunch other deer average in size still packing full racks!
I just got back from the ATA show...and now I need a break from my break. I'm super antisocial, but my dad asked me to check out the show to see what he needs in the shop this year. Lots of cool new products and awesome people.
All the TV personalities were at the show, along with some pro athletes that I didn't recognize out of uniform. Jim Burnworth and Michael Waddell were walking around BSing with anybody they could find. It was cool to bump into guys like David Blanton just chilling in the food court. Sadly, we left early on Wed. and missed the Buck Commander guys. Eva was very nice! Craig Morgan...taller than you expected??? And we talked babies with Lee and Tiffany.
How do you guys not visit your buck at the taxidermist? I've driven by his shop 4 times in the last month and it kills me not to stop in and see if there is any progress. I'm positive he hasn't even started yet, but I'm so excited to see the finished product. This is my first mount since my muley at 10 years old.
I just put it out of my mind (when I have one there). I'll call about halfway through to the expected date and then near the expected done date. I figure if I don't at least call once in a while, mine is liable to get put off, squeaky wheel and all that.
Here is the plot location I have picked out. I was checking it out yesterday while refreshing the mineral site...it's actually bigger than I thought at about 50'x75'. I missed the 11 pointer last season from the big white oak on the right of this pic.
Cool! I can list some of the challenges you're going to have there to consider. It'll likely need limed heavily, those leaves tend to grow acidic soil. May need to lop off a couple trees in there to get enough sunlight. You'll probably also want to rake or blow the leaves off the top of the plot goodies in the fall, a blanket like that on top of plants doesn't work well. The leaves would make a good addition to a compost pile. Positives: Looks to be in a good area for deer, acorns (tree mast), cover, stand placement, decent size, little prep work, hidey hole situation, good set for cameras.
Sounds doable. I cut firewood on this property to earn hunting privileges, so maybe I can suggest taking a couple of these trees. I love this spot! It pinches down to about 20 yards between the pine/cedar bedding area and the stream. Bucks run that ridge all day scent checking the bedding area.
Sounds like too good of a spot to risk ruining with a food plot, if it's a pinch point close to bedding, I wouldn't introduce food in the pinch point, but that's my opinion.
This plot would be at one end...about 40 yards from where the pinch widens out again. Too close? I'm a plot rookie and was trying to use an existing clearing.
I just got permission to hunt a little property next year. I did some scouting and found a nice sized old shed and a velvet dead head. And some pics from the property owner...
Season is coming to a close here in IL this weekend. Still hoping to get on the board some how. Our two biggest bucks have made it through the gun seasons, which was nice to see on camera. I'm hoping this cold weather will get them to feed during daylight. They have been coming out closer and closer, so fingers crossed, I can make it happen. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
My season is OVER and wish it could of been a better one. Maybe next year for my wall hanger. Now get to shed hunting after my surgery. I have a torn ligament in my wrist that I have been dealing with for the past 3 years and now it is time to get it done since bow season is over. Thank you all and way to go for the ones putting up points. Wish I could have done better with my bow. I had a good season with three deer-2 does and a nice 8 point but the buck was with gun. I have recorded a very nice shed already too. It gross scored 74 inches even and then nets 71 6/8". I was very happy to find it now to match it up. Here it is:
Man this weather has been nice! I found two sheds today and a dead head. I thought I recognized the deadite as one of the regulars I call Jaws but turns out to be a different deer I don't know. I think it was a yote kill.
