As the rut gets closer and closer, where should I hunt? The majority of my land really thick timber, with 3 ag fields. What should I look for while on a little speed scout one afternoon? Because honestly, I don't have a stand over anything but food sources. I've seen trails, but I guess I'm kinda discouraged by them because they're not the beat down, dirt showing trails. I don't know exactly where the deer are bedding, but I have a good approximation of where they bed. I just want to know exactly what I should be looking for when I go out so I don't put too much pressure on them.
A good place to start is inside the corners of those ag fields, that should get you started. Also look for acorns, they should still be dropping. If you are hunting for a buck then you need to find the does. The most important thing though is look for sign, droppings, tracks, rubs, scrapes etc. If you find that stuff then you know deer are in the area.
a lot of times...........and correct me if im wrong fellow hunters...........ive noticed that if I can find a well beaten solid trail.....and then I find one several yards off paralleling it that is smaller and not as often used.....that its a buck skirting a major doe travel route
if you have a good idea of the bedding and feeding...anything between these should produce...assuming that you make sure your wind is going away from bedding in the evenings or toward it in the mornings... also....throwin up a few trail cams will help significantly
