I was out shooting my bow this evening like I normally am and just starting to think about my sight pin size. I have a trophy ridge five pin with .019 sized pins. I shoot really well with this sight but I was wondering if i would shoot even better with a smaller pin. If someone could discuss the pros and cons of each pin size, I would be greatly appreciated.
It's all opinions. I personally prefer the .019 because when I have a small pin I'm trying harder to keep it in the middle. For farther distances like 50+ yards I would like a .010 but closer than that I think .019 is the way to go.
I like .010 pins personally. Definitely a finer aim point. Helps me be more accurate Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I switched to .010 pins last year and like it alot. It helps me "aim small...miss small" Its a personal preference IMO.
I have 5 pins on my Spot Hog. The top two pins are 0.19 and the bottom 3 are 0.10. I had them custom make it that way. Best of both worlds IMO.
Thank you guys for the replies. Is the .019 so much brighter than the .010 that you can tell? or is it really not that big of a difference?
It is slightly noticeable. The key is to get a quality site that has good fiber optics. Then it is no issue because the pins are so bright anyway. I know my Spot hog is always lit up long after shooting time anyway.
I've wanted a 10 thou pin forever but haven't been able to find one. I can see my 19 thou pins fine in low light. I want the precision on the smaller pin.
My eyes are getting old. Can't see the .010 well. Now considering a .026 for the top pin and .019 for next 2 (I only use 3 pins). I think the .026 is brighter and easier to see in a blind. At 20 yards the .026 is not to big for me.
Ok if I shoot a multipoint sight I like the top pin to be .029, the next two .019 and the last .010. I also alternate yellow and green. The .029 is usually the 20 yard ping and is brighter and carries more light as it gets dim. As light fades I reduce my range to accommodate. With a single pin I go middle of the road and stick with a single .019.
For a hunting sight I like a .019 pin, gathers more light so it's brighter in low light situations .... Honestly I've shot .019 & .010 pins well past 100 yards a lot and my accuracy doesn't really change any. If you start stretching the yardage out much past 60yds even the smaller .010 pin is covering most of the target aiming point up. I've heard a few Pro shooters who still prefer the large .029 pins, they said that at long range it doesn't matter cause your covering the target anyway and they've also said they aim "hold" better on target at long range because they aren't fighting a smaller pin try to keep it one spot...Little easier to float a larger diameter pin pretty much. Overall, for me, the .019 is a good, happy medium though.
For hunting,.019 is as small as you need. .010 would be good for spots or 3-D. I remember when .019 was considered small, now it's just the norm.
