you have to be one quick bow slinger to shoot a charging boar in the dark with a flash light in hand

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but aren't hogs in season all year round? Meaning there are already legal gun hunters in the woods during your archery season any way? That's how I ready the regulations for them.

So you can't hunt hogs on public land at all, or just during bow season?

I've never been against practical regulations. Being able to carry any firearm you want with you while bowhunting just doesn't make much sense. Its just asking to be abused by outlaws.

You can hunt hogs on public land during the entire hunting season with whatever weapon is in season at that time.

they also had a .22 cal run on hand guns for you to carry for snakes they just upped it to account for larger animals such as hogs and I would guess bears in other parts of LA

Ok, makes sense now. I can see where you are coming from. One of the reasons I love bow hunting is the absence of gunshots. I can see them allowing handguns for "protection", but if they want to keep people honest, allowing rifles is just asking for people to abuse it. It's not like a rifle is going to do you much good if a hog is charging you.

What if it is not for protection? Say someone wants to shoot a turkey with a shotgun or snipe yotes with a rifle while bowhunting for deer?

well there is no fall turkey season in LA

as for yotes...wait till rifle season?

I don't know. I've just always enjoyed the comfort of bowhunting without everyone packing high powered rifles.

I will carry my 9mm just for protection. If nothing is coming at me then I'm not shooting and I agree they should have just allowed only hang guns because there isn't a need for a rifle plus carrying one bow hunting makes no sense. To much junk to carry around bow hunting as it is, but i'll feel better going to the stand in the dark in the hog infested wood I hunt and will feel better about my wife walking to her stand also.

I agree very much, why not protect yourself there are hogs and snakes that most people never see where they hunt. Hunting is a contact sport in the south there are gators in the swamp. Bunch of Yankees :poke: that was in fun. Just moved to ms. Myself

Why does this conversation have to be about protection from hogs? Anyone with proper background check should be able to carry a concealed firearm, period. Hunting or not, private land or public land, makes no difference.

True. In Ky if your legal to carry you can carry while bow hunting. I'll take my 9 with me on public land.

Carry 24/7/365 I say, concealed or not. Lived in LA. for 4 years and killed several hogs, never witnessed a charge. I live by the theory that I'm not gonna die for the lack of shooting. Actually witnessed and killed more hogs at Fort Benning, GA. than at Fort Polk, LA., could have been less hogs in the area I hunted, don't know. LA. does have some good hunting though, several game species for sure.

I actually got charged by a sow, turned out to be a bluff, on Fort Benning. It happened so fast I was just standing there holding my bow without time to even draw back, if I'd had a gun I wouldn't have had time to use it either. Luckily she turned away a few feet in front of me. If anyone thinks they will be protected by having a holstered pistol or slung rifle while carrying a bow they are wrong. It's such an unlikely thing to happen it's worth it just to accept the risk and enjoy the woods with your bow. I'm not against carrying a pistol but I think that's all that should be allowed, I expect to see people "bowhunting" in my area this year with a bow slung and a rifle carried, plenty of gunshots to finish off "wounded" deer will be heard as well.
