I went shed hunting/turkey scouting this morning. I watched a couple strutters with 3 jakes and 7 hens. One of them has at least 2 beards, maybe 3....couldn't tell for sure. I checked another field and found a few more strutters, but they were at the far end so I couldn't tell for sure how many birds there were. Anyways, things are looking good for season so far.
Well I got my bow back yesterday. Today I will test to see what I'm able to do with it. I'll be cranking my poundage down immediately, I just hope I'll be able to pull it back without hurting too bad.
Looks like I am going to get to hunt this coming week. Going Tuesday morning. This will be the first and many years I didn't hunt opening day yet alone the first week of the season. I hope it goes well!
Hunted turkeys by boat today. Had a great day! Lots of mid morning gobbles. The bad news is I lost the coin toss and my friend was first up. He took a really nice 24 lbs bird. The good news is we fished for a couple ours on the way back to the boat ramp. I have 12 slabs of crappie in the fridge soaking! Probably hit it again Friday.
Yeah I was afraid it was gonna hurt too bad when I drew back, but it wasn't bad at all. I'm ready to go.
Well its opening day here and thunder storms are in our forecast for this weekend. The rain has held out so far. Nobody I know has heard anything today. Birds are hen'd up like the last 2 seasons.
Thanks. The same storm came through here, but not until about 2pm. I worked a second gobbler until 11:30 but 40 yards was as close as he ever came. Real hens were coming to him all day. Rained here most of the night so I slept in today. Sorry to hear about your basement. Been there.......bummer. Good luck all!
Tomorrow is opening day and I couldn't be more excited. Went out and pulled the cards today and finished getting everything set up for the am. http://forums.bowhunting.com/trail-cameras/71564-april-turkeys-mpe5.html#post1089887
It's been a slow morning for my wife and I so far. Both my brothers, my brother in law, and father in law have birds already. Hopefully something happens soon.
Friday morning I worked this bird and finally got him into the decoys. I switched to Nokturnals and they don't seem to be as tight on the string. When I was just about to drop the hammer, my arrow slipped off the string. I can honestly say, that has never happened to me before. So, in my haste to put it back on, I put it on below the proper knocking point and even at less than 12 yards my shot did nothing more than cut some feathers off of him. So, on Saturday, I went to the same field with different calls, no strutter decoy...just two hens and I set up in a different area of the field. After lots of subtle calling and a couple hours of working him, I got redemption at 12 yards and made a great hit this time, taking out his hips. Not a huge bird, but very sharp 1" spurs which normally indicates a 3 year old here. I will wait to see if I get a second bird to enter one in the contest. My understanding is that we get to enter the best of the first two. Good luck everyone. Great job Just Passin thru!
