I will sometimes leave a tip. However, I don't agree with the tip jar really. Why should people(waitresses/dishwashers) get a tip when it was most likely a cook and a hostess completing my entire order?
Some of the places by me charge more for take out, I never leave a tip for that unless I know the person dealing with me.
Yes I tip for carry out. I base it on the service I received, were they friendly? Was the order filled in a timely fashion? Was the order taken correctly? All of the above corresponds to the gratuity I leave
While I don't patronize any of fast food chains I would just that they are staffed by hourly employees. When I think of take out I am mostly thinking of regular sit down establishments that also have a take out menu ...so wait staff, bar tenders ect . Now I do usually tip at say Dunkin Donuts ect ....
Why is it at a average type of place they give you the stink eye when you put the tip on the credit card but if you are in an upscale place they graciously accept it? I have heard that they don't like having to pay taxes on the tip, funny I have to pay taxes on every bit of income I make why does it bother them?
I am not sure that's the case. Since most places divide all the tips up between members of the staff I can't see how taxes can be accounted for individually. Most likely the total CC tips are tallied at the shifts end and cash is drawn and then divided up. Taxes would still on the individual . Most likely the stink eye is coming from a server that planned on skimming a portion of the tip pre pool...
I rarely if ever leave tips for takeout, and we get takeout often. I find it annoying that no matter where I go there is a tip jar waiting for a handout. If I am not sitting down and you are not serving me then there is no tip. I have never bought takeout that was prepared by the wait staff, they usually have separate takeout areas with dedicated employees for the take out.
Having worked 10 years in a restaurant I would say about 15-20% of people tip for take out. Catering was 85-90%. We worked out tips like this. Host/hostesss - split tips from takeout and were "tipped out" by servers. Servers got their own tips, but were expected to tip out host/hostesss. Cooks got paid to be cooks. They only occasionally got tipped by servers if they bailed them out throughout the night (ie making orders on the fly for forgotten of mid ordered items) Cooks did get a split of catering tips though, since in our particular case, they did most of the work. On a side note, servers in Mn get paid the regular minimum wage + tips. Our top server made almost 90% of what I did as GM. Much of which was tax free.
Like every situation that requires a tip it mostly depends on the service, so if the waitress/waiter or whoever I'm dealing with sucks then they get a crappy tip. So I guess in some instances that screws alot of people but oh well, don't be a bad server if that's how you get paid.
My wife and I tip well when we eat out and are served. For example we ate out for like $15 for breakfast the other morning and tipped like $10 to the waitress. However, if I have to drive up and get my own food, then I was not served, hence no tip.
Of course you know I was just kidding. But it is interesting. Not sure why I tip at some joints and not others. If I drive through I don't tip. If I go in to pick it up I normally do. Doesn't really make sense, but........ If you are ever passing through, I would be glad to fix you some $25 eggs and toast!
I normally do, especially at the places where they bring the food to your car instead of having to go in.
I do depending on what type of service it entails prepping my stuff for me Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
What I find amusing about tipping and big tippers. Not pointing any fingers at anyone here but just in general. You look down at people working at Mcdonalds, Hardees, Walmart or other places like that and say they don't deserve decent pay and should find a real job... but when it comes to a waitress or waiter who works for a low wage that they should be tipped because they need to survive on it. Shouldn't they just find a real job too ??? I work on a farm producing food for your fat asses... where's my tip ?? Tim
