I prefer free lining baitfish close shore fishing over deeper water with what feels like a brick on the end of a stout rod.

I'm actually going mid March. Flats fishing is on my bucket list while I'm there. Very interested in the feedback from anyone that has some knowledge.
Are you going in the north or south part of the peninsula? Northern is more tarpon and the southern is more permit and snook. To be honest I don't know yet. We are staying at the Grand Velas Riviera Maya. I haven't really done any research yet on what fish are close or what setups I might need.
You're going to be just north of where I am going. I'll be in puerto aventuras in mid April. From the research I've done you'll be looking at permit, snook, bonefish and juvenile tarpon unless you go offshore. The biggest o think you'll run into should be a 30-40 pound permit. I'm a little hesitant to bring my bass gear because I don't want to have any saltwater corrosion issues. My rods are all one piece as well. I do have a decent two piece 8' spinning rod with a baitrunner reel that I used to use for stripers back in NY. It might be overkill for a lot of those fish though.
Yea I have a bait feeder reel for live bait that I'm thinking of bringing. Might be overkill for snook but from what I'm ready permit are every bit the fighter of stripers and blues and definitely bigger than blues. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
See if you can rent a kayak to fish out of, works pretty well. Casting artificials should work if the bite is on. When casting and retrieving cast over the areas with the sand not the grass, actually the edge of the sand and grass. I think it would be worth it to spend a day watching the locals fish and snorkeling the area. Just like deer a day spent scouting will pay off. Most places don't sell bait other than shrimp or worms, if you want minnows you have to net them yourself.
I'll bring my cast net too and try and get some mullet. I'm allergic to shrimp and can't even touch them without breaking out. Renting a kayak was definitely one of my plans. And the snorkeling is a great idea. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
