I'll be 61 in May. I'm pulling 60 lbs. on my Hoyt, still use a climber and still hang stands. I doubt if I ever use a crossbow because by then I won't be able to walk.
this begs the question what about 13yr olds? 14? HOw can they bowhunt. Anyway nobody over 50 should bowhunt
I'll be 60 in two weeks and have no plans to quite. I currently shoot 65lbs with ease and could easily handle 70lbs if I thought it was necessary. I still hang my own stands and walk in over a mile to some of my sets. I can't imagine anyone would think that a healthy man over 55 wouldn't have enough strength to hunt effectively. the more I look at his statement the more I agree... THE AVERAGE PERSON.... probably does lack the upper body strength to draw and shoot a bow comfortably at ages much past 50's. Have you really looked at the avg person past 50 in this country? talk about out of shape..lol. SO.. How old is too old for bowhunting? when you can't pull one back comfortably anymore.
Ted shoots a 45 makes me feel better. I am going to buy a 50-60 carbon knight this year was going to get it last but could not find it in time. Scotty
My Dad is 89. He rifle hunted last fall and plans to next fall.. He was never a bow hunter but I know at 89 he would have no issue shooting a 50-55# bow. I have tried to get him to bow hunt for years bow he says he has to much work in the fall.
A man, besides my dad, who has helped to teach me how to hunt is 62 and still shoots a bow..and still claims he doesn't need a sight on his compound to kill deer..he is right haha
I would love to ask you when you are 50, if you are willing to throw in the towel.... It is all a matter of perspective and yours will change, I am sure. As for youth... if they are strong enough to pull a bow which will kill "humanely" and they have sufficient knowledge and skill to make clean kill shots then, age should not limit them either. T
I'm 58 and just bought a new NO Cam HTR with a 70# draw. Not a problem. I've got a physical job and I workout everyday. That's just the way we do it here in Minnesota where a deer is the biggest thing the state will let you shoot. We've got bear but it's not much sport and kinda expensive. As long as you take care of yourself it doesn't matter how old you are.
I'm glad we have so many fit old farts on these boards Not everyone is that lucky. My dad started struggling with bow poundage in his mid 50's, I bought him a lower one to squeak a few more years out. He couldn't climb trees anymore, made far too much movement drawing a bow, so he quit for a few years until they made crossbows legal. He got one and is now back in the fall woods once again. He's still not the most mobile person, but since getting his xbow and renewed passion for "bowhunting" again, he's killed his biggest bucks.
Questions 1. Do you agree? NO!!! 2. If you disagree, why? lots of us old farts still out there and we're doing just fine 3. Would you buy a new bow 50-60lb to stay in the game? yes... but only because I've always hunted with 60's 4. If you are past 56 have tactics changed, X-cross, ground blinds ect? yes some.... 62 now, still will carry the climber in 1/2 mile or so... but past that it's a ground blind... also think ahead about hunting area more now.... do I really want to drag a deer out of there?? is there some where I can drive closer?? ect...
I am 63 and have been shooting 60# - 65# since 1978. I never have seen the need to go to 70#. A lot of things are changing for me but not because I am loosing the strength to shoot. This season is the first season I've missed in a lot of years. Not due to age but some medical treatments I had going on. I'll be back out there next fall shooting 63# again. I'll bet you could find guys in their 70s on this forum that are still hunting and doing well at it. I know there a plenty older than me around here.
