My truck has a topper cap for the bed. So not an issue for me to transport although my goal is to kill a buck with a rack so big that my topper won't close and then I could haul my deer around and let the world see. I do feel that we get a bad rap as hunters for a variety of reasons, most completely unjustified but some are justified. Some areas of the country hunters may need to show some discretion but in other areas displaying it would be seen as a badge of honor. Just using a little common sense at times can prevent unnecessary problems. When we are successful we are all proud of the accomplishment and would like to share that but how we share and with whom is the question. I get to share with who I want mainly from cell phone pics and texting them to those that I want to know. Just me though, I will say that seeing someone's deer in a trailer or the back of a truck always piques my interest.
Not on the topic of offending anyone, but on the way home from deer camp this weekend I seen a deer on a hitch rack, fully exposed, in the pouring rain. All the road wash was spraying right up into the cavity. What a waste. The deer was clearly ruined.
All that amounts to is a lot of rain water soaking the deer, I don't see that as a big problem. That deer should be fine. Temp would be a bigger concern to me though.
When I was a kid it was common to see folks traveling with a deer on their hood or trunk of their car exposed for all the world to see! It didn't screw me up.......much. For me, I gut and clean the animal as well as I can, not for political correctness, but for respect of the animal and for sanitary purposes. The deer goes in the back of the pickup, tailgate up for safety, and off we go. I don't prop heads up, and don't care if you do or not. If I see someone hauling a deer down the road with guts hanging out, I may think them a slob hunter, but that's none of my business. For the ones that get offended, start by fixing the violence on tv, the movie theaters and video games. You and your kids get exposed to that crap and violence much more often than the occasional "exposed deer". Rant over. Good evening.
When I see an exposed rack in a vehicle, I`m happy they gave me an opppritunity to see it. Any time I shoot a decent buck the tailgate is down. Not trying to flaunt it or cause someone to be disgusted, but as a hunter other hunters want to see it.
I believe in wisconsin it's state law to leave it exposed until it's registered, but I might be wrong...
Wrapping the carcass helps keep the dirt off the tenderloins. Most people would not buy a steak and strap it to their car for all the road dirt. Think about it. People in general could care less about hunting or someones deer, until some hunter decides its his job to teach the general public about it. We are all proud about our successes and should share them with all other hunters. Why intentionally piss someone off just to beat your chest. We don't think about or care much about muslims. They have been slaughtering people for thousands of years. Have them put a utube video up, cutting the heads off people and we become outraged. It is no different here. Just keep it within the hunting community and nobody cares. People generally don't say much about gays until they try to force their agenda on us. Expose their feelings in front of our kids and try to tell us it is o.k. Flaunting a deer carcass serves no good purpose to the hunting industry. That is now being taught in most of the hunter safety courses by the ambassadors of our sport. If we want to protect our sport for our grandchildren we might want to think about what we are doing sometimes.
Is this not MERICA!?!? Why so many Sallys about proper transportation of a deer? The proper way is anyway, as long as its dead!
I can see both sides of the coin. Nice bucks are hard to come by and I believe every hunter likes to show off his success to a certain degree, but on the other side of the coin I believe we have to protect our hunting rights by displaying the deer in class. In my state of Washington we have so many animal activists and city folks who have never left the asphalt farm thinking that hunters walk into the forest and murder Bambi and family. Unfortunately at least in this state there are more of these type people then the outdoorsmen. So if the "wrong" people see a harvested animal being displayed improperly it can influence there votes that pertain to our future hunting laws. I usually try to do as others on here have posted which is if the animal I harvested is decent sized I don't mind propping the head up a bit in the truck to show just enough horn to tease other hunters into looking a little closer and for the non-hunters they have no idea what they are seeing as they drive by.
I will never apologize for being a hunter. With that being said I dont keep my deer in the back of the truck driving all over town showing him off. From kill site to truck then home to be hung up. I just put him in the truck how he fits with all my other crap in there. Typically you will be able to see some of his rack. I understand if its just a bloody mess with it dripping down your car or whatever but really if it offends you sorry go on with your day and I will continue driving home to get my deer hung up and taken care of.
In the back of my truck with the tonneau cover closed. i live in an area where hunting is a way of life and have seen more than one buck drug into the bar to show him off, which is just ridiculous. i wish pictures were enough....
Not at all! The only thing I would change there is, I'd tuck that tail down to cover his bunghole. Other than that, I think that pic is perfectly fine. I guess it all depends on who you're trying to please these days.
