So as many of you guys know, Nick and I have been planning an Elk DIY hunt for about the last 8 months. I'm happy to say that we're headed out to CO on Aug. 31st. I want to share the experience with you guys because the original thread received so much response from guys who are also from the midwest, would love to do an Elk hunt, but don't know where to start. I'll give you a quick synapsis of what we're doing. 7 days. Driving. 23 hours of driving (one way). We'll drive straight through, taking turns at the wheel. Not telling you what GMU we're in except that we'll be in CO. OTC (over the counter) tags on public land. (Approx. $600, bull/cow combo tag) We've spent some quality time at REI and Cabelas for the last few months, and put the finishing touches on our gear yesterday. I'd like to thank the members here who really pitched in and gave us some great advice. All in all, this is going to be a dream trip for me, and I'm really looking forward to it. We'll continue to update this thread as much as possible once we hit the road and when we get back.
Its a good thing Im going to be busy all week or else it would take forever. To be honest it just snuck up out of no where on me.
Good luck!!!!! Just finished a Cabelas run myself as Elk opens up on Saturday. I picked up a Bugling Bull elk call to replace my old one, I hope the people at work don't mind me practicing.
Will do. I think we have a total of 3 GoPro's and assorted other cameras. So we'll be sure to get some footage. Hopefully some of it will include an elk or two. I'm not great with a camera in any situation, so I'll just cross my fingers and push the button.
