Good afternoon fellow hunters!!! I bought a tractor 2 years ago and started to get serious about planting food plots. Last year we planted about 1/2 acre of corn, we fertilized and limed. We double seeded with a broadcaster and disked it under. It turned out better then we expected, but the darn turkeys beat it up so bad it was gone before deer hunting even started. We are trying to find something to plant that the turkeys don't like...but in doing some reading they sound like they dang near eat everything.. Any thoughts on how to keep turkey's out of our corn, or any suggestions on a good late season food source? (After it snows). We are in Northern MN. Thanks for any advice!
Yeah, I am planning to hunt them in spring, unfortunately there were about 40 of the darn things on our property....so shooting one won't really do much...
our long term goal is to plant more, but it will be 2017.. We have a lot of small trees and brush mowing before we can expand...
I just post my plots, "No turkey's allowed". You won't likely find anything the deer like that doesn't cross over to turkeys as well. The only viable option is to plant enough to weather the browse. Try something like a fall wheat, turnip, clover blend that produces tonnage per acre and offers some regrowth. Grain doesn't work very well in super limited and over pressured, high animal density areas.
HA, HA! I'll have to get a few signs, maybe hang one "does eat free in November". Thats a great point on the corn, we might end up changing to something that continues to grow.... Thank you for the feedback CoveMaster!
