How good is skunk oil as a cover scent ? I was told just a drop or two on each boot and your good . Just afraid it will spook animals away
The way I look at it is. The only time a skunk sprays is when he's been spooked or cornered. Go with coon or fox of you wanna use that type of cover scent, that'd be my suggestion. Don't use a lot though, just sip it. It doesn't take much for it to come out your pores and do a dandy job of masking your human scent.
Sometimes you gotta think outside the box....How does a deer equate that the smell of a skunk means danger ? I use to use it in the early 80's
There is no cover scent that is going to hide your human scent from a deers nose, cover scent might help on the bottom of your boots as you walk in but you are better off eliminating all your scent that you can.
I honestly can't believe that this is still a thing... Putting skunk oil on your boots???? Whatever floats your boat but no way in hell am I putting any kind of skunk oil or fox/coon piss on my boots. My suggestion would be to use nothing.
I haven't used any scents in nearly 20 years. I used coon and Essence of Skunk . Never have put scent on me. Coon and skunk is a natural scent found in the woods. The idea using them was to give the impression that other animals have been around , better than no animal smells in the vicinity which in turn put the deer on edge as to an area void of natural odors.
It works to cover your scent going to and while in your stand just two drops one on each boot tip Sent from my SM-G870W using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
We used to send newbies all over the ship for buckets of steam too, back in navy days!! Lol. I hope nobody actually drinks the sh&%t.
I recommend using the new cover scent deodorant called EverCalm. It's a little hard to wash out of your pit hairs, but works great.
I guess I should clarify that statement also...that has nothing to do with deer hunting or cover scent.
A skunk releases the odor when it is alarmed or threatened, why would you want that indication on you?
The key is to it is. Not putting it on your person but consuming it. I agree skunk isn't the best choice for hunting. But it's a great coffee blend with a warm biscuit. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums

Walk into a Italian restaurant and take a whiff. What do you smell??? Maybe garlic, oregano, italian sausage and the hostess' perfume. Now if you put some skunk scent (or any cover scent) on the hostess - do you think you won't smell the garlic anymore??? And that is with our poor human sense of smell. Imagine what a deer will smell.
Cover scents should be used AFTER odor neutralization. So you remove the garlic, then put on the skunk.
