I have been hearing and reading about mineral plots. What are you take on them? Any experience using them? Construction? Thanks! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Your answers will vary depending on who you ask. Some see value while others do not. I usually put minerals out every year just in the chance it helps. I started doing that because when I was a kid when we would clean the salt boxes after the meat had been cured deer would dig up the spot. Figured they liked it more than needed it but nature has a way of making animals crave what they need. I usually by a commercially mixed bag or block and put it out. Still looking for my favorite one though.
Did something change an you can use mineral in Wisconsin? In the past it was considered bait and you could only use it in a county the allowed baiting during the season. Just wondering....
I put out minerals and found them extremely effective, the deer seem to come in twice a day or so to them, especially does with fawns in the spring.I pile up some extremely rotten spongy logs, pour the minerals over top and soak it with water. Lasts just shy of a month. The deer end up eating all the spongy log and then digging up the dirt to get more so I always need to fill it back in.
Monster Raxx on the forum sells a mix that I have heard good things about and will be trying. He is a great guy and so far have only seen positive reviews about his product. The best thing to do is go to YouTube and search for deer mineral sites. Lots of good information there.
Put it out late in the fall or later in hunting season when the deer aren't really using them. They will sit over the winter and the deer will find what is left in the spring. Wisconsin regs don't say you have to take "bait" out of the woods after season of the deer haven't eaten it.
Never heard of the term mineral plot, is this just a mineral site/lick? I've read a far amount on trace minerals/salt on food plots, the theory is the plants uptake the minerals and the deer utilize by consumption of the plants. I do this in WI, not sure if it helps ir not, but in theory it makes sense.
Not legal to put them out between the close of the season and the day before bow season. But if you get them out before end of season I don't read anything in the regs that say you have to pick them up when the season ends. That's the only way to have a "mineral" site in wisco.
