Im from northwest ohio and the weather we have been having has not been all that great. 12-15mph winds last night coming from nnw, so i decided to change it up and take the climber sit somewhere new. I sat on the south east corner of a woods very little wind if any :nana:, early off 5-5:30 i seen a small 6 point chasing some does. Ive shot a lot of does and 1 buck with my bow and this buck would topped him so i would of shot, but he ended coming in the woods on a different trail and bedding 50 yards to the left of me. About 6:30 i notice he gets up and heads out in the opposite direction so i proceed to wait. Well about 7 here come a BIG buck never had on trail cams 20 yard easy shot so i thought. the arrow hit towards the back half of the shoulder and the way the arrow looks it had 7 to 9 inches of penetration. He whipped around and stumbled front end about hitting the ground and took off like crazy through the beans. I waited about an hour and went and looked for blood no blood but i did find my whole arrow in the bean field about 100 yards from where i shot him. The arrow has blood all the way to the top of the nock, not a real dark more of a brighter red no bubbles though and its not pink. 5 yards from where the arrow was there is 2 drops of blood but thats all we could find so i backed out after going about another 50 yards looking. Going back out this morning he was headed towards a creek what do you guys think about finding this buck. I was nervous and take full responsibility in the bad shot never shot at a deer like this, im going to track today until i know for a fact that deer is still on his feet if he is im taking a couple people with me hoping to increase my odds of finding him. thanks guys

Sounds dead to me. He has a broken off shoulder. You just gotta find him now. Most likely, he will be laying on the edge of that bean field maybe 30 yards into the woods if you didn't jump him up.

One reason for the shortage of blood could be you only have the entrance hole for the blood to come out of and it is most likely higher on his body so the inside of the deer could be filling up with blood. Also your entrance hole could be blocked with fat. Good luck with finding him this morning and let us know the outcome.

Good luck. If the blood trail is tough look into tracking dogs if legal. From what you say sounds like a good hit to me. Look forward to pictures!

A deer running in a field can make it hard to find blood unless it is really pouring out. It seems easier when a deer is walking but it doesn't mean a deer is bleeding more... You got him good... if you can't find blood, there are usually tracks in a field that you can follow. When he reached a thicket, he probably laid down unless he was jumped again.

    Good luck with your search.

7-9" should be plenty, how high up were you? Secondly you said he tore off into the bean field. How far were you able to watch him?

Not sure of the area but I'd take a tall stick with something high vis and stick in the ground at last blood. Head towards the closest non field terrain and check higher vegetation for blood. See if you can find any blood where he exited the field, if he did. The field should be relatively easy to search but with a high single wound might not offer much blood, so a trail would be more difficult. Check heavy trails at the field edge for blood.

Even going from last blood back to where he came from, they'll often run a big loop on their death run instead of a straight line.
