Deer season is fun but hunting by yourself can be sketchy at times. Does anyone carry a pistol while bow hunting for obvious reasons? Obviously not going to be hunting with the pistol but where I hunt occasionally there is no cell service and coyotes are a big problem. Anyone else do this?

Yes...If I'm awake and upright then I'm carrying and that includes while bowhunting. Our state allows it so I'm even legal :tu:

I will carry when out Bear Hunting or on unfamiliar grounds, Don't feel the need during deer season.

I don't believe it is legal to carry a sidearm while bow hunting in Iowa. Some fine print about having a transportation tag that permits killing a deer with a pistol. But I carry everywhere else.

To be honest I'm not really sure what the rule is in IL regarding carrying. Traveling to/from work is the only place I don't carry due to our HR policy but this being my first year in IL and also the first year they have issued CCP's I'm not sure.

Your HR's policy is ridiculous. Could you conceal carry and just keep it on the DL?

I usually do. I even carried a sidearm when I was carrying my 300 win mag. :)

If I ever need to use my pistol to save my hide, it will probably be me trying to signal for help after I fall and break an ankle. :p

The carry permit here doesn't allow you to carry while hunting as of now.

Having said that I carry my shield still while hunting, scouting, or being in woods. No real reason for me to other than because I want to. Hopefully that'll change to my glock 19 I just purchased once get holster.

I have a M&P Shield too. It's crazy that it's not lawful to carry while bow hunting. Anyone who looks at the Shield would quickly realize that it would be a terrible gun to hunt deer with. But I leave mine at home because it's the law...

I don't carry, but if I did, I would probably leave it at home during hunting as I hunt mobile almost every sit and it would just be one more thing to 'carry'.

Yea I'm not sure the reasoning either. Most handguns people would carry wouldn't do much good for deer hunting. I don't all the time and only do because I'm on private land which isn't really a excuse but having coyotes follow me back to truck couple times kinda freaks ya out ha.

Agreed. And yes I could still carry. But the risk is more than I'm willing to gamble. Positions in my field at my income level typically require relocation and I've already done enough of that.

I have before when I hunt public. I'd rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it.

    California...... sucks.

§354. Archery Equipment and Crossbow Regulations
    (h) Except as provided in subsection 353(g) of these regulations and in Section 4370 of the Fish and Game Code, archers may not possess a firearm while hunting in the field during any archery season, or while hunting during a general season under the provisions of an archery only tag.

I don't even think my CCW permit will make a difference.

Good choice. If I could, I would no question. I can walk around the mall with one, but not while bow hunting.....Things that make ya go hmmmmmm.
