A while back I asked about alternatives to health insurance here. Well the time has come and I will be giving notice at work tomorrow. Going out on my own and working as a sub most of the time with a good buddy of mine. Excited, nervous and ready for the change. This has been in the works for the better part of ten years and I think the time is finally right to make the jump.

    Wish me luck.

Good luck to you in your new adventure. You mentioned health insurance, and since that is what I do for a living, I thought I would give a little advice. If you are coming off your group (employer) insurance, you will have a 60 day window to purchase your own insurance. If you miss that, you miss the special/limited enrollment and will have to wait until open enrollment in November. More than 3 months w/o insurance and you are subject to the tax penalties.. 2% of your income per person or 3x for family. Not trying to discourage you in anyway, but want to make sure you know the new laws/rules. Many are calling me who have no insurance was were not aware of the open enrollment.. they missed and have no insurance. Again, absolute best of luck to you with your new business venture.

Congrats Ruger! I went out on my own about 7 years ago and still going strong. It's tough at first, the first 3 years I did any job I could find no matter how small it was. Now I don't have to advertise, all my work comes from word of mouth. I had many weeks thru the years just scratching by looking for work, but just keep at it. What kind of business, What line of work?

Best of luck to you! Have a solid plan. Have a solid budget. Have a solid sales projections. And then just make it happen . First couple years will be tough. It gets better as you grow and experience. Factor in some office/administrative time.

Congrats man. I'm jealous of you. I've been wanting to go out on my own but I don't have the balls to do so.

I didn't either until now. It also helps that the company I have workers for the last 9 years has told me I always have a place there if it doesn't work out. Takes some of the risk out of it and my my wife feel much better about it.
