What are your thoughts on this? Not a Steelers fan, but saw this story and thought it was very interesting. Seems to be a pattern of early retirement lately....is it the start of a "movement"? I'm wondering if more players are going to decide there are things more important than football.

Regardless of how much I love football, longevity and walking away with the money are what really matters. Winning a Super Bowl is great but to make millions and step away from the game to be with family and do the things you really want to do in life heavily outweighs the former.

I guess he feels his long term health is more important. If he saved and invested well, He should be fine financially.

I don't think Worilds was gonna be a Steeler in 2015 if he kept playing but his retirement was certainly a surprise.

I agree...but his health isn't the reason he retired, he left so he could be more active in his religion. I admire that even more.

If this continues to happen I think you're going to see even smaller rookie contracts. The NFL and teams are going to make them earn the money before retiring at a young age.

What does Jason Worilds retiring have to do with rookie contracts? He was a free agent who had played for 5 years.

Also, rookie contracts are small compared to what players can make on their second deal.

I do think that the NFL would make a change to contract structure and signing bonuses if players with higher signing bonuses retire and don't pay back the unearned portion.

I was under the assumption that he was retiring due to health reasons. My point was if this trend continues with players retiring after making a quick million, I doubt NFL teams will pay young players as much. They will reward the players that put in the time.

No he retired to devote more time to his religion. I do agree that young players should be held accountable for not fulfilling their contracts by giving back part of their signing bonus. But that doesn't apply to worilds.

Yep. I read some of the posts I must have missed before and saw the religious reasoning.
