I cannot tell you how many times a month the police have to respond to citizens homes, other police officers homes, and federal agents homes in order to investigate firearm thefts from their vehicles.

Friendly service reminder in efforts to keep guns out of criminal hands.

we have had several officers and Detictives cars broke into in the ATL area in the last few years, they have lost everything from service pistols to shotguns and ARs plus gear like bullet proof vests.. We even had a FBI agents car broke into that had full auto weapons in his trunk

The bad guys knew they were police and did not care...

I know this all too well. Had my window bashed in and two pistols stolen in Birmingham back in 2013. Police surprisingly recovered one of them though.

I now keep a crap pistol for the vehicle that I don't care if it gets stolen or not.

I travel to places like Gary, IN and Dolton, IL for work. I keep a loaded .45 in the glovebox locked because my company does not allow me to do client visits with a concealed weapon, even though I am licensed. The gun laws and policies of most large businesses foster the environment and I'm not getting car jacked or killed in the dumps I visit in my territory.

Stories like this me evolve faster into being a grumpy old man. This country is going to hell in a handbasket and the process is accelerating. It wasn't that long ago actually over 30 years ago when I was in highschool and we went duck hunting before school and it was known that we had our gear in our truck including guns. It was a non issue heck some oft the teachers let us into class a little late if the shoot was good. My point is things have really changed, first you respected the law you would never consider ever touching a LEO's car or property. Feral people have been allowed to continue, and when they get what they deserve there is outrage. Second the world is a crappy place if you have to be on constant look out so people don't steal your stuff.

I'm wondering why you would leave a gun in the car if you're not there.

There could be the exception. For example, here, if you have a CPL, you can bring your gun on school property, but you can't bring it into the school, (unless you're planning to kill people.) So you leave it in the car until your business in the school is done.

But if you're parking your car for the night, why not take it into the house? (Cops who have to bring more than one gun to work, would be an exception, of course.)

If you're planning to have a few drinks, leave the gun home.

I can't carry my gun at work so I leave mine in the truck during the day and when I get back to my truck it goes back on me.

I can see that. I am allowed to carry a gun on campus, but not allowed to bring it into a dorm or classroom building. So naturally, I take it out of my purse, which is specifically designed for concealed carry, and leave it in the car.

I might add, that no one, outside of my immediate family, knows that I have a CPL.

Where in your day to day travels do you expect that you would have the highest chance of ever needing your handgun?

On campus after dark, the grocery store parking lot after dark, my home after dark, not necessarily in that order.

If I am at the grocery store after dark, I ask the manager to have someone escort me to my car. They are happy to do that. Even though I carry, I try to avoid situations where I might have to use my gun. Once I was working in the lab and didn't notice it had gotten dark. I was going to call my husband, but two of my fellow students insisted on escorting me to the bus stop, riding with me to the parking lot and walking me to my car. (We all have bus passes) As I said, no one knows I carry.

I have a firearm within 0-50 feet 99% of the time. The people who get them stolen the most often are either LEOs (because criminals know they have them) or people who advertise where they keep them. I assume people have them in their vehicle because so many businesses/places don't allow concealed carry, nothing you can do other than keep it in the vehicle until you can put it back on your person.

I should have worded my post better. Don't leave guns in your cars overnight or for long periods of time. Of course we all keep them in our cars for quick trips.

Funny how honest people are that carry them legally, they actually do not carry when a sign says not to.

Very few businesses here bar weapons. I say very few because I have never seen any. It's just possible that there are some. Going into a business that bars weapons is not a violation of our concealed carry law. But the business can have you busted for trespassing. If I came upon a business that barred weapons, I would just shop elsewhere.

Michigan is actually fairly gun friendly. For a while we were the only state with 100% reciprocity, that is we would recognize a CPL from any other state. There may be more states like that now, I don't know.

Carrying in certain places IS a violation of the concealed carry law however, schools, hospitals, sporting events with more than 2,500 people, college dorms and classroom buildings, etc.., If you're caught carrying in one of those places, you can lose your permit.

How about having over 7500 rounds of Barnes Tac-xpd in the car?

Not that I have that of course. Just speaking hypothetically..... ;)
