My PS3 received the yellow light of death, so I need to get a blue ray player ... recommendations? I want it for movies, but I would not be against it for online capabilities....I am pretty ignorant when it comes to these so I am all ears...
I don't know hardly anything about them, but my girlfriend gave me a lower end Sony last Christmas. It does everything and more than I need it to do. Plays Blu Ray movies, connects to wifi for Netflix and whatnot, has bluetooth so I can play music from my phone or iPad while laying in bed
What's your budget? I'm a fan of Sony players. Here's the one I bought last year . Most modern players will do everything you need it to do (App selection/bundling is different among brands, but most come with your standards - Netflix, Amazon, Youtube, etc.). Some have 4K upscaling which is all up unnecessary at this point, but something to consider for the future.
The Sonys are very good and reliable. With the Wi Fi, you can get Netflix or any of the other streaming video services around, pretty cool stuff.
4k upscaling would be beneficial if you have a 4k tv. I have an LG and it was really inexpensive but does an awesome job. All my up scaling and networking goes through my surround receiver.
Yeah, it's best to let a receiver/third party handle upscaling especially if you're dealing with a budget player (1080 to 4K is a pretty big upscale). I also just assumed Tony didn't have a 4K TV since they are just now starting to become a bit more budget friendly and marketed more heavily. Not to mention the set itself will upscale content if need be (just about as good as a budget player).
Is there another way to get 7.1 surround sound? I know streaming through direct tv won't get it. What about Netflix and such?
Just wait until Blackfriday ads come out and then stick to some name brands you know. I've already seen a Sony one for around $60 I believe at Best Buy
That's why I mentioned it. The future is now as the 4k tv's are becoming affordable. Black Friday is probably a good idea. My wife picked my LG up for less than $50(i think, I know she didn't spend much) and I'm happy with it.
No idea to be honest and if that is imporant to you then OK. I can go with that. You know darn well PT doesn't have 7.1 surround. He is watching the movies with his TV's speakers.
As a side note, I don't know what it is. I'm big on a lot of technology, but TVs don't do it for me. I can't get into really watching TV too much, so maybe that's why I tend to drag my feet on a lot of the "new" video technology (i.e. curved displays). If we didn't have winter, I might not even own a TV :D I still have a 5 year old Bravia 52" LCD TV that looks perfectly fine to me. Tfox, I know it's perceptual, and often subjective, and maybe I need to own one to see, but is upscaled 1080p on a 4K set leaps and bounds above native 1080p? Actually curious. Eventually, 4K native will become much more prominent are more capture devices support it, but as it stands now, aside from a few niche movies, EVERYTHING on a 4K set is upscaled, and upscaled significantly.
I don't have a 4k as of yet. It is on my list of soon to purchase items. Some great deals on black friday. But i may wait just a bit longer. I can say I am upscaling get everything to 1080 now and there is a substantial difference. Not true 1080 but there is a difference. I have looked into the 4k tv and they are light years ahead of 1080 in picture quality.
I was asking for me, not for him. 7.1 is an awesome listening experience. Right now, blue ray is the only way to get 7.1 that I know of. If available on netflix, it may be worth downloading movies on flash drive?
Good to know. I haven't seen it, but it's most likely calibration issues as most box stores aren't good at that thing. I hadn't researched it much recently, but I know most were recommending holding off on 4K sets unless you have a good way to upscale. Maybe I'm just behind on the times :D
