I found a gravel bar yesterday where the stripers were busting shad. I made a date with my son today after school and we went back to the same spot. This is 2 hours of fishing... we were even catching two at a time when I tied tandem rigs. He said it was one of his best afternoons ever.
You mean like this? This was caught below the Gorgas power plant on the Warrior River about ten minutes from my Dad's house in Parrish Alabama... New Landlocked Striper World record. I think it was 81 pounds but I have never caught one even close.
I often hunt in the morning, fish in mid-day then hunt again in the afternoon. I hunt some public lands along the river which makes this doable. I also only live 1 mile from a couple boat ramps and I hunt on my property. Not to mention 60-70 degree days are pretty common throughout hunting season. We have no fishing seasons.
Ya that would be a quality one for the salt as well. Most surf fisherman try to get the magical 50 pounder which a good amount get every year.
We are having a fish fry at Dad's next Saturday with as much of the family as we can round up. He may come down and do some fishing one afternoon which would definitely do him some good after his past few years of taking care of Mom. Not only did I gain some great new memories... I recalled some old memories as well... It was a really good day.
We tied tandem rigs with a Bomber jigging spoon and a Little George. We can cast them a country mile and the fish were nailing them better combined than they were individually. Use a snap swivel about 30 inches above the Bomber. I may try it with a large float next time to add some surface commotion. The bigger fish were definitely nailing the 7/8 oz Bomber. I bet this rig would work great in coastal waters too.
I use live sand Eels or peanut bunker. Or will use a big surface popper or swim bait in peanut bunker coloring.
Had to look up Peanut Bunker. LOL AKA Menhaden. Great baits. Here's a tip I use for keeping them alive. I get a large 3 litre Coke bottle (the kind with the larger top) and use a soldering iron to melt dozens of holes into it. I tie a weight around the nozzle with a two foot cord and toss it in the water until I get ready for another bait, then I simply take off the cap and pour one out... put the lid back on and drop it back in the water. Works great... at least in fairly calm water and warmer temps.
Muzzy, that is awesome. Some of my fondest memories of my childhood and into my early adulthood are of fishing with my dad.
Awesome stuff. Before i could swing a 12ga around me and my father spent many weekends fishing on our private lake in NY.
