Scary stuff occurring. The fact that people are not cooperating with quarantines is making this terrible problem much worse. Now a guy has symptoms in Saudi Arabia after returning from one of the affected areas. . http://rt.com/news/178280-sierra-leone-ebola-outbreak/
I thought I had read a hospital in New York was treating somebody with possible symptoms after he came back from the area. Its real scary stuff
from what i understand it's not easy to contract ebola. I heard on the radio that the man who found ebola said he would ride next to someone on a train with ebola. I don't think I would do that but I'm not too worried
You have to have contact with a bodily fluid. (Sweat, blood, saliva, semen, etc.) It is not hard to contain with proper precautions and quarantines. The problem is in these poor countries the population is not cooperating and there isn't enough protection. It can happen real easy though. I guy that is sick in an airport is sweating and wipes his forehead and grabs ahold of a railing. You grab the same railing and itch your eye. Bam.
There is now speculation that ebola can spread through "air contact" within certin species of animals. So far tho it is not believed to be relevant to humans check out the link From Pigs to Monkeys, Ebola Goes Airborne | HealthMap
Ebola is about as good of a pathogen as you could find for an outbreak (from our perspective)... It only lives for 1-2 days max outside a living host, it kills people extremely fast (harder to spread when compared to something like flu), and it is hard to contract from person to person relatively speaking. Certainly a scary bug, but the media is sensationalizing this to be some end of mankind (as they did w bird flu, and swine flu, and etc etc)
Yes, but recall those infected have high fevers, are sweating profusely, puking and have explosive, um, bowel movements... Granted the disease spread is exacerbated by the cultural habits, hygiene and poverty conditions common in W Africa. ~Bill
From my understanding, people in good health can defeat ebola rather easily. A lot of the problem is in thrid world countries where malnutrician is a way of life, their bodies cannot cope as easily. Also, there technically is no cure, but there is medicine for this. The issue is that you must take it if you think you are exposed. Once it sets in, it's too late. It won't spread around the US like it is in Africa.
Hardly. It may as well be on the moon. Emory has state of the art quarantine setups for instances exactly like this. What we gain in academia from studying/treating it here vs in a tent in a jungle far outweighs the risk of spreading it given that it's at Emory's center. Not to mention it's the right thing to do. It's not like we sent the guy home on a Southwest Airlines flight lol
It's not like the CDC ever screws up or anything...... CDC closes labs over mishandling of deadly pathog…: http://youtu.be/tx5gqYXB06g
Well said. Can someone explain how so many people are dying because of this disease if it is not spread through the air, etc? I would assume the almost 1,000 people are drinking out of the same containers, etc?
