Recently, I started having sever cramps in the muscles of my lower legs. I mean this would keep me awake at night with a few Charlie horse like pains. I would just be relaxing at night and I could feel the muscles twitching away getting ready to cramp up. Let me say that I am 61 years young, I don't do any running, cant due to previous leg and hip problems, but I try to stay as active as possible. I went to my doctor, and asked him if I had "restless leg syndrome", he said NO !!!
I was on hydrochlorathiazide, (water pill) for high blood pressure and he said to try going off of that for a while (don't worry, I have other prescriptions for this condition).
That seem to work for about 95% of the pain now. He also told me to go and get some of the stockings or lower leg stockings that put pressure on the muscles of the lower legs.
Has anyone else had this condition and what have you found out works the best to alleviate some of the symptoms ?

Let us know if you come with any solutions. My husband has a problem with occasional leg cramps at night. They don't wake him up, they happen right after he wakes up.

We're thinking it might have something to do with the fact that his beverages of choice are coffee and beer, so it might be connected to dehydration.

It's not my place to nag, but sometimes I will bring him a glass of water or some iced green tea that I've made.

I use to get leg cramps A LOT!
Had an Amish friend tell me to drink a glass of water prior to going to bed and if during the night I suffered cramps to get up and take a Tablespoon full of yellow mustard! Yes... mustard! BINGO... after doing that a few times I have not suffered any leg pains or cramps while sleeping in months!!!!!

Calcium, magnesium and/or potassium deficient? A few bananas and some OJ seems to help with me.

Tonic water its what doctors recommend because of the quinine that is in it. I have drank it and its not the greatest taste but it works. The leg cramps disappear after a while.

    Tonic Water Leg Cramps?

Tonic Water Leg Cramps? - Ask.com

When there is a sudden contraction of the muscles in the leg, leg cramps happen. The pain associated with this cramping can be relieved by drinking tonic water

Quinine is also effective against malaria. Didn't know tonic water had it.

Add lime, and if inclined gin.

Hah! Never heard a woman say that before.
And I can almost guarantee that your husband's problem is a direct result of his drinks of choice. Used to happen to me all the time in my mid-20s. Sometimes my legs or even my feet would cramp while I was asleep and I'd wake up screaming like a girl. Or I'd stretch too hard when I woke up and could cramp anywhere from my toes to my shoulder blades.

Have him drink powerade or even pedialite before bed. No more cramping.

That's why it's called "tonic" water, and also why Brits love gin and tonics. Malaria was tough on Her Majesty's troops in India and Africa.

I actually like pickle juice, vinegar, not so much.

I don't get them very often but I got 1 one time while at deer camp laying in my camper. Crawled to my cooler outside the door, downed some pickle juice and stood up and walked back in. It worked that fast.

I knew that pickle juice was basically vinegary gatorade, but I had no idea it worked that well. Bonus for me- I love pickle juice.

I think athletes nowadays are downing pickle juice and taking ice baths. No joke. Next best thing to pickle juice for recovery is chocolate milk.

My son is drinking milk after his workouts at high school.

He gets cramps BAD but refuses to drink pickle juice or vinegar. Stubborn 15 year old.

It does for me but everyone is different.

My brother saw a guy outside a bar once that had a full body cramp going on and went inside and got a teaspoon of vinegar and gave it to the guy.The guy was so grateful my brother didn't buy a drink all night.
