I have been wanting to buy a pistol for personal defense and shooting for quite awhile now. I think I am finally ready to pull the trigger. Just at have no idea what to get.

I'm leaning towards Glock due to their reliablity. I am 5'8" and 145 lbs so I have fairly small hands. I thought I wanted a 9 mm but am kind of leaning towards a 40 or 45. I do plan on carrying this piece in Colorado this fall. I think a 9 mm would just piss off a bear.

    Suggestions please.

I went today looking again myself.... I'm down to the glock 23 or the m&p shield (both are 40s)

Thanks for the response. I'm liking the look of the 33 gen 4 in 40. I need to go to the gun shop and hold them all.

Yeah the 23 was a gen 4 today, I'm not sure I'm not leaning more toward the shield.

I'll be sure to check out every gun possible and am not set on brands. just wanted to get some models in mind to make sure I look at. I do not want to spend over 600 and prefer it be closer to 500.

Yeah, I hear you there. I've been actually looking for quite some time. From feel those two are my favorites....and have shot neither.

Glock 23. Absolutely my favorite handgun of all time. Easy to conceal during the fall and winter, can be tougher in the summer though.

Revolver wise, I would look at a Ruger SP101 in the 4" model.

Glock 30 will be the nicest handling 45 you'll ever shoot and can be concealed with a good iwb.....for year round carry I'd go with their compact 9mm...its model 26 I believe....as the 30 might be a bit bulky for shorts and a t even with iwb on your frame (they have a 40 to...im just not a fan of that caliber compared to others)

    Other than glock....

Xds 45 or 9.....great guns....don't fit me well grip wise

I love my sig p238....the 938 would be your 9mm in that same crazy small size....380 is a little easier on the hand but neither are bad enough to make it an issue

Ruger sr9c....my first 9mm and one of my all time favorites....can't say enough about it

A revolver is a must in the safe for me to......38 special is the way I'd go in a ccw revolver.....Charter arms are cheap but man are they a workhorse...great gun for the money.....Smith and Wesson... well revolvers is kinda what they do so yeah....top of the line.....the ruger lcr is also a great ccw option in revolvers and about between the other 2 in quailty....very nice gun

even on the off chance of bear attack in CO ure way off base with calibers....get into 10mm or 44 mags and now ure there

Small frame and bear protection don't exactly go hand in hand. 9mm, 40 S&W, and 45 are all going to leave much to be desired if you truly have to stop a bear. If you are going to try and get all that in a single handgun and you have a smaller hand......I'd strongly consider a Glock 29 SF in 10mm.

I understand that. mainly it's more for peace of mind lol. bear protection is far down on the list of reasons why I want a gun.

scratch bear protection off all together. What I need in a gun is a easily found ammo for a good defense gun. The bigger the better. I'm not scared of alot of recoil. just need something that I can conceal on my small frame.

I'd really encourage you to look at a 9mm then. It's the cheapest ammo by far, readily available, and you can shoot lightweight 115gr ball ammo all the way up to some pretty stout +P loads that will ballistic test right up there with most 40 S&W.

I've got a Glock 19 Gen 4. It's got probably 2k rounds through it now. It's literally never malfunctioned and I've shot some crap ammo through it. I'm carrying Gold Dot 124gr +P's. It's tough to conceal in shorts and a t-shirt but it's my go to choice for carry when I've got heavy enough clothing to conceal it.

You got me interested in the 29 sf. good reviews on the gun. I don't shoot a ton so price of ammo isn't huge if I love the gun. really don't have a preference in caliber though but do like big guns lol. I'll have to drive to the gun shop to look at and feel many different guns very soon.

Glocks are great and a 9mm is perfect and cheap to shoot.

I would definitely go and see how they feel in the hand. You might also want to see if there is a gun shop that rents or has a range where you can shoot some of the guns you are considering. I have a Glock 17 9mm and a Springfield XDS .45 for conceal guns and like them both.

I'm agreeing with Rick James here... go 9mm. Tho' my everyday concealed carry gun is a .45 XDs.

My open carry gun for when I'm out hunting/hiking is a 9mm Beretta 92f. It's really too big to conceal but it's very accurate and tough as nails. I could beat a bear to death with it. :)

See if you can shoot one before buying. That gun is going to be a handful for even a very experienced shooter. Unless you have a lot of trigger time already I'd really suggest getting a smaller round so you can better focus on learning great shot execution.
