The pool finally opened again. I don't ride back and forth with my son to Auburn much anymore so I have been running more and swimming less these past few months. Anyway... finally back in the pool this week and working on building back up. Day 1... 2500 Yards... man that was brutal... especially the first 800 before I finally got my rhythm. Day 2... Two swims... first; 3000 (without going to the gym early)... second 1800. Day 3... I was feeling really good until a young lady cut her foot somehow and they evacuated the pool for health reasons. I got in 1952 yards before I had to get out. My shoulders are feeling good... low back is a little sore but not injured. Anyway... We have a nearby lake that's about 12 miles long... I would love to swim its length someday... no idea why... just something I think would be cool to do but I have never really swam open water before. I understand it requires some different strategies. Any words of wisdom out there?
I will be pulling a rescue float and have either my son or my dad escorting me in my boat. I am thinking I will try about 3 miles first and maybe work up.
Muzzy, Just FYI, dont workout your chest and tri's before going for a swim and swimming hard. I did it once and since my tris were maxed out, I would literally try to pull myself out of the pool without a ladder and just collapse because my triceps couldn't take the weight of me.
Thanks... I learned that lesson the hard way too. My biggest issue on long swims is usually cramping calf muscles... I probably should stop to hydrate but usually don't until my legs lock up. Hydration will definitely be something I'll have to take more time to do.
Its crazy how much water you have to drink when you swim, you don't really think about it but it really affects you. At our pool we had this big metal pipe that used to dump tons of water into the pool, all of us drank out of it. I have no idea what kind of water came out of that.
Funny... I run along the Alabama River in the mornings before daylight. Last summer on several occasions I would stop and go for a swim in the dark to cool off. I went back Bass fishing one afternoon and saw an 11 footer where I had been swimming that morning. Sobering, yes, but I really don't see many gators around here.
Nah swimmers take pride in peeing in the pool. If it turns purple they would pee more for ****s and giggles
Don't have any good advise for you other then try to swallow as little water as possible lol. Can't wait to hear the story of you swimming the lake!
Update... I have been continuing the gym time almost daily and 15k runs 3x week plus my swimming. I am knocking on 3 miles so far which takes about 1:30-1:40. Next week I hope to go 5500. Some days I do two swims of around 3000 each depending on how I feel. Once I make 10k yards I will probably start working on the open water parallel swims. It has been helpful that an AF Academy Swimmer swims in the lane next to me a lot. She is really fast but mostly does sprints.
Made 7000 today... going for my first open water swim next week after I build a handicap accessible bathroom for mom. I will stay 10 yards off the bank and let my son drive next to me in the truck. I have a 2 mile stretch where this is possible. Except there are a few gators there... I ain't sk-sk-skeered.
I have cotton mouths to worry about here. Why do snakes swim??? I've been running 4 to 5 miles a day. Thought about picking up swimming but they drained the pool and shut a gym down. Wtf?
Word to the unwise - Dont eat Gyros with fries and a sugary drink then expect to do well past the age of 21. That was one painful run.
I feel ya... got sick running Tuesday morning... miserable feeling. Every day running can take a toll on knees and ankles as you get older, be careful.
I've inly encountered wild gators once in South Carolina. Are the prone to attack or will they just try to avoid you? Either way you couldn't pay me to go in that water unless it was 4 feet deep and crystal clear and I had a shotgun or boom stick Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
