This map shows what day of the year the average citizen of each state has earned enough money to pay all of their federal, state and local taxes for the year. If your date is April 1st it means that all of your income from January 1st through March 31st is just enough to cover your taxes. Louisiana is the lowest taxed and Mississippi is 2nd lowest. So when is yours and what do you think about it now that you are facing it?
It's no surprise the southern states rank the best, they are the poorest states and thus pay much lower rates on taxes.
Somehow I doubt the accuracy of saying that Tennessee is #47. The only reason we rank that low is there is no actual state income tax. We're one of those lucky states who get to pay an outrageous sales tax percentage instead. I wonder how they factored that into their rankings? What other states use sales tax for revenue instead of state income tax?
Heck I'd MUCH rather pay a sales tax than an income tax. This is a HUGE advantage if you are smart with your money and trying to save some back... Kentucky is lucky enough to pay both.
Isn't TN 9% sales tax? Heck in Birmingham I'm paying 10% tax on anything I buy AND paying an income tax on the checks I earn.
It's either 9.25% or 9.75% - I can't remember which, and from what you're saying it doesn't sound bad. I couldn't complain anyway, though. Most places I shop are around the base here and they offer a 10% military discount, so it works out really good for me. Does everyone in Alabama get shafted that hard? I'm starting to feel lucky I live where I do.
No it depends on the local municipalities and how much they tack on. Statewide it is only 4% Sales Tax, but it is 10% in Birmingham lol. If I go USPHS or Military, my first order of business will be establishing residency in one of the few states that offer no state income tax and operate on sales taxes instead. Big break. Looking at the map, that is insane for CT and NJ... they literally almost work til the halfway point of the year before turning a profit. lol
Its all relative to say having an earlier date is "best" if that just means you live in a state with poor educational system, poor health care systems, and bad roads. You know, those little things tea baggers don't think about.
Although I expect nothing more out of you UJohn, once again you are wrong! Here is the overall ratings taking into consideration: education; healthcare, roads, taxes (income and sales), and cost of living. The rankings are from best to worst. State Rank Tennessee 1 Virginia 2 New Hampshire 3 Wisconsin 4 Georgia 5 Kansas 6 Texas 7 South Carolina 8 Indiana 9 Massachusetts 10 Kentucky 11 Michigan 12 North Carolina 12 Oklahoma 14 Missouri 15 Montana 15 Nebraska 15 Vermont 15 Alabama 19 Iowa 20 South Dakota 20 Florida 22 Rhode Island 23 Idaho 24 Arkansas 25 Wyoming 25 Delaware 27 North Dakota 27 Ohio 29 Maryland 30 Pennsylvania 30 Colorado 32 Utah 32 Illinois 34 Connecticut 35 Mississippi 36 New Mexico 37 Washington 38 West Virginia 39 Louisiana 40 Nevada 40 Maine 42 New Jersey 43 Oregon 43 Arizona 45 New York 46 Minnesota 47 Hawaii 48 Alaska 49 California 50
Posts like that are what I would expect to see in the CNN comments section - not here. I've never posted a comment on CNN but a morbid sense of fascination draws me there sometimes. Reading the comments on CNN almost makes a rational person lose ALL faith in humanity.
No that is a typical uncljohn comment. You can generally smell it coming.... The northeast is cesspool of confiscatory taxation. The map is correct and fair representative, in fact I think it doesn't portray the true picture of how bad it really is. If you add into property taxes which I don't think the map reflects you would see its even worse in states like CT, NY and NJ.
